Croatia in early October?

Thinking of going to Split area in first week of October.
Will it be warm enough to swim in the sea and eat outside in the evenings?
thanks

The other option is last week of august but I think it will be too hot and busy?

Anyone?

I have been to that area several times. Once in early October and the weather suddenly changed and became cold and wet. The restaurants started closing. If it was me I would opt for August rather than October.

Thank you that’s helpful

We went in early October and the weather was lovely. Perfect for sightseeing but maybe not quite hot enough for a purely beach holiday.

Not hot enough for me to want to swim personally, but I don't do cold seas or cold pools. Plenty of people were still going in the sea. As it's had all summer to warm up it was probably quite pleasant. I doubt it would be any worse than in May or early June when hadn't had the benefit of a couple of months of very hot sun on it.

I hate it when you go somewhere hot with a pool and it's not heated but it's still early in the season so the pool hasn't had a chance to warm up even if the weather is hot. They always say 'Oh it's boiling here, we don't need to bother heating pools.'

Well in May and June you definitely do!

Yes, to echo what the above poster said, I was in Dubrovik and Cavtat early to mid October and everything was open, lively and busy. My friend went literally two weeks later and she said it was dead. No-one around and loads of things closed, even in Dubrovnik which really surprised me.

Not Croatia but I did some Greek islands in October and the weather/sea was lovely but everything closing down for the season was a bit depressing. By the end of the trip we were struggling to find anywhere to eat.

Thanks everyone really appreciated
we can’t go in September as DS is away - I think I might postpone

We went the first two weeks of September in 2024 and it was absolutely scorching until the last two days when we had a spectacular all-day thunderstorm (I loved it!) followed WA massive cools down and expected power temperatures for the next few weeks.

Wonderful country though, I adored Split.

Shinyhappyapple · 21/06/2026 20:13

We visited Split last year 3rd week in September. It was warm enough to swim in our unheated swimming pool and definitely warm enough to eat outside during the evening. Most days it was a bit hot for me, although it did cool quite a lot with some rain on our last day. We had a similar experience the previous year visiting Dubrovnik during the last week of September. Some days a bit cloudy, early 20s, other days late 20s.

Personally I would choose early October over the first week in August. This year we will be going to Sorrento first week in October, forecast is early 20s and I would guess Split to be similar. I think the issue is that once you get into late September the weather becomes unsettled, so some days will be quite hot, but others cooler and possibly storms.

Thank you - I think as long as it’s not rainy we will be fine!

I have lived in that area for the last 19 years. First week of October is a perfect time to visit. Yes no guarantees with the weather, but more than likely it will be beautiful. Swimming definitely still an option, you just no longer need to avoid the middle of the day heat. In the evenings probably a cardigan is enough, sometimes not even that.
Plus the sunsets will be amazing and it won’t be so crowded.
