What clothes and shoes for Madrid in late summer?

Going to Madrid end of August / beginning of September. I've never been to Spain but, from what I can tell, Madrid is very much a city break with lots of walking?

So, I anticipate nothing more active than casual strolling.

I assume it's boiling hot there during this time?

Has anyone been who would be able to help me understand what clothing and shoes I should take?

We are staying 7 nights at a self catering apartment. I'm not sure how posh the restaurants are or if they are all very casual?

Any advice welcome.

I'm not picky with trousers vs dresses but I do prefer flats and no heels.

Thank you!

Compared to the French and Italians, the Spanish tend to dress much more casually. We were there last October, and met up with an Italian colleague of DH who’d moved there. He’d definitely gone native!

The metro is good, and covers a decent area, but we still did a lot of walking. They eat very late, even later than Italy. Think 10pm.

It will be very hot and not sure what you mean by ‘casual strolling’? You will be walking A LOT. Restaurants are fancy or as casual as anywhere. Understand that churches generally require modest clothing. I always find Madrileños dress stylishly, so if shorts they are not athletic style. So casual, but not sloppy.

Your most comfortable shoes.
As pp said, it's a huge capital city so restaurants at every level of grungy to fine dining Smart.

Been there loads of times for work. It will be really hot so cotton and linen only. It’s fantastic for food and I found the dress code very casual even in the work setting. I usually walk or taxi when I’m there. So definitely comfortable shoes, Birkenstocks etc
