Chickenpox and heading to CentreParks

So we are due to go to CentreParks on Monday. My daughter had a bit of a fever at the weekend, still ok though, a good few spots appeared on Monday but we put it down to a heat rash, by Tuesday it was clearly chickenpox. She's had a rough time of it the last couple of days, totally covered, already a lot of it has scabbed over. We're booked in to CentreParks from Monday and to cancel would mean losing 50% of the cost which we can't really afford and there's the Airbnb at the halfpoint etc. She will be past the infectious stage when we get to CentreParks but from speaking to other parents, it takes ages to clear up so the spots will be very much visible.

I need a second opinion, should we be cancelling and accepting no holiday this year or crack on, ignore the looks and explain ourselves if anyone askat

I just want to add that if you can’t afford to lose 50% of the cost due to cancelling…you can’t afford the holiday really. Is it already paid?!

DaisyChain505 · 05/06/2026 07:37

I’d be going. Worst case scenario is that you spend more time than usual in the accommodation and do less activities around other people.

Givemeausernamepls · 05/06/2026 07:41

Give them a ring and see what they say.

My DD spots took over a week to come out - she did have loads! Both DS were less than a week and didn’t get many spots.

PurpleThistle7 · 05/06/2026 08:15

I’m so sorry. My daughter was unwell a few days before we were flying to California for a family reunion and her cousin’s wedding and we had to cancel. So I get how disappointing it is.

Definitely get insurance next time but that won’t solve anything today. So right now I’d call and ask if it can be moved. If it can’t, could you check super carefully and just wait a couple days for everything to definitely be scabbed over? Go for half the time you’d planned? And avoid the pool - that’s for her sake as much as anyone else’s. You really don’t want an infection.

Just a quick update. Crisis over, called CentreParks, turns out we'd booked the flex option and we could easily move the date. We are now going in October and the relief i feel is insane 🙌

It’s not fair on pregnant women attending.

Why? Chicken pox is only a risk to pregnant women if they haven’t had Chicken Pox themselves and the vast majority will have done. For any women of child bearing age who haven’t had Chicken Pox, a vaccine has been available for decades.

What bollocks.

I’ve spent £1000 on a holiday this summer. I can afford it. I can’t afford to throw £500 at nothing.

If you spend 1k on a holiday and attend the holiday or spend 1k and not go on the holiday, the financials are still the same, it’s not based on your attendance. You can either afford it or not.

Clearinguptheclutter · 05/06/2026 13:13

Good result

I would have gone anyway but it’s good that you can go and hopefully enjoy it to the full

BridgetJonesV2 · 05/06/2026 13:18

That's a good update, chances are your DD still feels a bit rough, it can really knock the stuffing out them. This way you'll all get to enjoy it.

Hope she's better soon.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/06/2026 13:24

@RocketLollyPollythe vaccine isn’t always effective. It wasn’t in my case.

Thats good you have managed to move dates OP.It will be something to look forward to for sure .Much better than worrying and getting funny looks! Have a great time !

Yes but the difference is you get to go on holiday and enjoy yourself!

My son caught chicken pox from his cousin two weeks after she caught it, we had a miserable Christmas and New Year with him thanks to them turning up without asking if it was ok. We’ve also all caught norovirus from them after they held their daughter’s birthday party in a play barn with lots of other children around and told us halfway through that they still had the symptoms. God only knows how many people caught it that day.

Too many people use wishful thinking because they are not wanting to miss out, or waste money, and don’t think about the impact to anyone else that’s going to be there.

That has nothing to do with affordability though.

Aw thanks, we are really looking forward to it. Some of the responses in here were a bit intense but I guess that's always the way. October should be great....maybe even better than the torrential downpour predicted next week lol.

A bit of an obtuse response, you sound lovely...

Go!

We went on holiday when one of ours had CP, we didn’t realise until literally one hour before boarding the ferry when I went to tie her hair up as she was hot and saw a single CP on the back of her neck. By the end of the holiday she was covered. We kept to ourselves on the ferry and DH and I split our time keeping her cool and happy while the other did things with the other DCs. We had a cabin on the way home. We still had a good time just adjusted for the situation.

you should definitely be past the contagious period if most of her spots have already scabbed over.

Badbish · 04/06/2026 18:44

Don’t cancel, if you can hand on heart say they’ve all scabbed over don’t worry. Any doubts keep her away from crowds

Agreed.

And you've got 2 days to go yet so even more chance they will all be scabbed over.
You'll be fine. X

This is absolutely appalling behaviour 🤬 You could’ve killed somebody who’s immunocompromised and possibly did for all you know……. I don’t care where you were, you should’ve turned round and gone bloody well home!
There’s a girl in my DD’s school with both Down’s syndrome and Leukaemia, if she caught Chicken Pox it almost certainly would kill her. It’s TERRIFYING to think of people like you out there with not a single fuck to give. Unbelievable BiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuit
