Rome accommodation with separate beds for parent and teenager

My 14 year old son and I are going to go to Rome in October to do all the sites, he really wants to go and he suggested it, I'm not dragging him then under duress!

Can anyone recommend a decent place to stay? We need separate beds obviously, 2 rooms is a bit out my price range. I have found a couple of hostels with private rooms which seem quite good as we can have a separate bunk bed each, but not sure if they are in dodgy areas - The Generator and Meininger, fairly near the train station which I have heard is not the nicest area.

Anyone recommend a not too expensive hotel or accommodation with separate beds, walkable to the main sites?

Thanks in advance!

What's your budget and for how many days?

MinnieMountain · 03/06/2026 16:15

Look on AirBnB. It's not available in October but a friend and I stayed in one in Monti (safe and walkable to the main sites) with a sofa bed and a bedroom that appears to be cheaper than Generator, so I'd look for something similar.

I had a twin room with my teen at Hotel Modigliani

We stayed at the Guardian Hotel. It was very nice with a lovely breakfast buffet. They do twin rooms.

It is fairly near the train station but the area it's in is absolutely fine with some nice and reasonably priced restaurants near by. It's around a 20 minute stroll to the centre so is nice and quiet at night.

It's worth noting though that almost all Rome hotel rooms are very small. They definitely squeeze in as many people as possible. There were 4 of us in our little room which was cozy but to be honest you'll probably be out all day and crashed out asleep once back at your room.

Well budget wise preferably no more than 300euros a night, preferably much closer to 150, but not sure thats feasible in Rome! 3/4 nights.

This place looks really good, thank you!

Luxury window at the Vatican. Gorgeous Air b n b close to a subway station. Very clean and well maintained.

Just look on Booking dot com or Airbnb and select the 1 room, 2 beds option. You should get loads of suggestions and then can read reviews and check map for a central location.

Travelling with a teen I find that an Airbnb works really well. It means you get a kitchen so facilities for making hot drinks, keeping a fridge and freezer stocked with cold drinks and ice (you will need it!) and snacks, prepping food in between meals. Saves so much money and hassle. I also always find an Airbnb with 2 or more bedrooms for less than the price of mid range hotels, so much better value for money.

We stayed at a holiday inn Rome for a few nights. Was perfect for us.

Iydrd · 03/06/2026 18:53

I did this with my 14 year old DS two years ago. We had the most wonderful time and I will cherish those memories for ever. This year I took 14 year old DD for a similar trip elsewhere.

I got an ‘apartment’ in a hotel that had a sofa bed in the living room and I was in a separate room. It was perfect. Even had our own bathrooms. It was very basic and quite dark but we were out all day and only used it to sleep in.

Thank you, this does sound perfect and great to hear someone else has done the exact same thing!

Yes I do know how to search for accommodation and read reviews 😃but I'm never convinced how trustworthy those reviews are, I wanted to get some more trustworthy reviews from here and hopefully some links and experience. Which youve also provided so thanks very much 😊

I find booking.com really user unfriendly and a lot of the time it's cheaper to book direct with a hotel. I'm also not sure I agree with the concept of air bnb although I have used them and they're not all bad. I'd also feel safer in a proper hotel than a random person's apartment. I also have no interest in prepping any food, I also want a holiday from food prep of any kind!

Sorry, I sound a bit argumentative any snooty, i don't mean to and I really appreciate your reply!

Stayed at the Althea Inn (will try to do a link) with my teenager a couple of months ago. Super reasonably priced for Rome and in a nice area a bit off the beaten track but very

Iydrd · 06/06/2026 20:55

i don’t know why my link didn’t work. Also tried to find it but failed so had to go back to my old bookings and link to it through there. This is it. Obvs I don’t know your dates in October but I just threw anything in. He slept in the living room and I had the bedroom that had the double bed and a spare single in.

the little patio was out of bounds as they were doing some building work so they allowed us to come up to the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and gave us a free breakfast each day to make up for it. If you can pay separately for that I’d strongly recommend it as it was a lovely breakfast and the staff were absolutely lovely

Hi OP, we stayed at Hotel maria vittoria which was lovely - under your budget and a comfy double bed and sofa bed. It’s cheap as it has no amenities like a restaurant or anything, and it’s fairly new.

Oh another good one! Thanks very much! I'll have too much choice now 😆

We stayed in a really nice apartment, two bedrooms, reasonably priced and close to the colosseum. The place was called Colosseo Gardens

frockandcrocs · 08/06/2026 20:49

My AirBnB in Trastevere (6min walk from the train station) was around £300 for the 3 nights we stayed. We walked everywhere, 40mins walk to Vatican City, Piazza Navona, a little longer to the Colosseum.
