Going home from holiday early?

Have you ever left a holiday early because the hotel and area were so terrible?

No but I’ve left early because my ex was so terrible, or just because I’d had enough and wanted to go home!

fantam · 30/05/2026 17:57

What is it that you don't like there? Is the room dirty, noisy, staff inattentive, food crap, pool crowded, no sunbeds, town tacky and dirty, too far to next nearest town, What? And where are you? We have to know that much!

Loveacadburyscreamegg · 30/05/2026 17:58

Yes, only one day early but we’re driving (France) so logistically was easier. I didn’t regret it.

Nofeckingway · 30/05/2026 17:58

Yes. Hated the place , hated the weather and got no sleep.

Thisisthedream · 30/05/2026 18:00

Yes, we stayed at a Eurocamp site near Paris. We had booked 10 nights and left after 5. We didn't come home though we booked a hotel for 5 nights at Disney and made it an even better holiday.

AddictedToBooks · 30/05/2026 18:00

Yes I have twice.
I didn't regret it either time. I think that if you really want to go home, then it's best to go home instead of staying on and being unhappy and counting the hours until you can go home.

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 30/05/2026 18:01

Yes, I have, because the bedroom was so bright I was awake at dawn every morning and also the bathrooms weren't as nice as mine at home. We also all felt a bit rough and when we got home it turned out we all had covid.

omghereistrouble · 30/05/2026 18:04

A few times, but my instincts said go home, so I was glad I did. Partly due to the accommodation, but the other part due to the bad company

I’ve switched hotels or location more than once as had just chosen badly. In Mallorca stayed in soller in a quaint old hotel but it was so loud as no carpets and stiflingly hot or noisy with the windows open. I couldn’t sleep and was in tears with it. Moved to a very nice modern hotel in port de soller and slept in aircon silence for about 18 hours. Bliss.

left a holiday once early as it became clear DH was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, it had been coming a while, and being away from home wasn’t helping.

ginasevern · 30/05/2026 18:04

No, but I tried to. 1982, 3 weeks in Torremolinos.

pizzaHeart · 30/05/2026 18:19

Yes, once DD fall unwell so we left one day earlier, it was in UK and we drove there so it’s easy.

Seagulldancing · 30/05/2026 18:24

Twice. Once was in a Eurocamp caravan as a massive storm rolled in. There was a queue to get out! And I took a DC home early once, leaving DH and the others to finish the holiday in peace.

Yes, villa in Spain with inlaws. The bed was just so uncomfortable it was difficult to get a good sleep and then when you did sleep you were awoken at dawn by a cockerel which seemed to have a sore throat.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 30/05/2026 18:38

A caravan site in the Lake District, just me & DS aged 6/7.
It rained a lot, the 'van filled with condensation & all bedding & clothing was damp. This was August.

We didn’t fly home but did do a “holiday on holiday” when in Argentina due to the hotel, which was in a unique boutique style which also doubled up as a dance school. Not mentioned on the booking. The 8 rooms didn’t have any windows apart from a small internal one above the door into the main corridor, which was highly oppressive, think Hollister darkness, coupled with the owner who was always on patrol in said corridor regardless if day or night trying to sign you up to learn the tango.

Drove me mad, so I booked another hotel across the city with a pool and packed telling him we were meeting a friend and would return in 3 nights time (we had paid up front). It was the at the same time that the G20 was happening and the city went into lockdown, so I couldn’t get the rest of our holiday dates covered anywhere hence the return as we needed a bed the night before we left the country!

I say there’s always a solution if things are not going to plan.

Another time I have changed country part way through a holiday, as the city was tiny and I had exhausted it, it wasn’t a country well served by public transport, so looked at flights and headed off on another adventure. Happy times.

No but I should have. Booked a half term self catering just me and two young kids and I was so ill. I threw up at every place we went but I forced myself to keep going as I’d paid for it and didn’t want to disappoint the kids (about 4 and 6). I should have just gone home.

mindfulmoaning · 01/06/2026 22:03

Yes

omghereistrouble · 05/06/2026 15:39

once we were on holiday in Devon my kids were 4 and 5 plus my late husband but by the 2nd day i felt really ill. it was clear it was either flu or a very heavy cold but i didnt want to let the kids down. dosed up with paracetomal then all day on the beach lay down wrapped up in our towels as there was no blankets. thankfully it seemed to help as by 4th day i could enjoy the 4-7th day so not totally lost

reluctantbrit · 05/06/2026 16:14

Yes, 2 days prior to scheduled departure, s/c in Wales. The weather was atrociously bad and DD's bedroom in the apartment stunk of smoke despite us constantly airing the room.
The agent couldn't even bother to answer my emails.

We had a good time with plenty to do and see but in the end we just couldn't be bothered staying,

HollyhockDays · 05/06/2026 18:36

Yes. But just one night early as the kids room had the thinnest curtains so they were up at sparrow’s fart every day. It also rained a lot. It was about 1hr 30 from home so we packed up late afternoon and went home. Was the best idea.

My sister was aghast and did this whole bit about how they would have packed a picnic for the next day and make a full day of it with wholesome activities before leaving for home at the last minute possible!!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/06/2026 09:06

Yes. Camping at the Queens silver jubilee weekend in 1977. Most peoples tents had blown away and ours was hanging on grimly. This was Dorset. Left a day early.
