Can toddlers have Valium?

'Cos if not - I'm taking some!

Seriously though, we're flying to the USA with maniac 21m ds2 soon. (Ds1 and dd as well, but they'll just put their heads down and sleep when they're tired.) There's something you can give toddlers, isn't there, 'encourage' them to sleep?

calpol night? and enusre they are tired before the flight, get them up early and encourage lots of running around airport play area no naps

artichokes · 22/06/2008 21:38

No they can't!
What about Medised? The guidance on Medised changed a few months ago. Before you could use it from 3 months and now they recommend 3 (I think). But we have always used it with DD since she was 3 months and it does help her sleep. It does not knock her out though.

phenergan, it's an antihistamine. but test it on him first, as it makes some children hyper .

barmymamma · 22/06/2008 21:42

please play safe and just ask your GP or even a phamacist, they wont think your trying to drug your child or anything, they will understand your concerns. at least then you know your child will be ok!!!

PrettyCandles · 22/06/2008 21:42

What are the dosages?

Medised etc are still safe for toddlers. The reason the guidelines changed was to prevent parents giving double doses of drugs because they hadn't read the packet and didn't realise that the compound meds (like Medised) already contained the drug that they were giving the child from another bottle. But of course it means that nobody will publish reliable doses for babies!

Medised....! I'm sure i'll get flamed for suggesting it but i used this when DS had a cold and it totally knocked him out after many sleepless nights.
My friend gives it to her DD (19 months) on a frequent basis to get her to bed .
(This does scare me as its strong stuff and should be treated with respect!!)

PrettyCandles · 22/06/2008 21:43

It's OK, I'm not going to give my child Valium, nor take it myself.

LOL - you may need a glass of wine on the flight tho Good luck!

JacobsPrincess · 22/06/2008 21:46

Pharmacists are really hot on parents who want phenergan to "knock out" children.
But I certainly don't blame you for trying!!

artichokes · 22/06/2008 21:47

You can give up to 10ml of Medised to a 22 month old.

I think the guidance was changed for two reasons. The one PrettyCandles explained and the fact that there was some evidence slightly increased mortaility rates in children with cerebral conditions who were given Medised. I think if your child may be coming down with meningitis or something you would be crazy to medised as you need to know if they stop being alert etc. But obviously that would not be a worry in the case of the OP.

Romy7 · 22/06/2008 21:50

definitely medised if you can't get hold of phenergan.

used to fly longhaul with all three from 6 months up (use to live o'seas - not flashy hols lol)

where we used to live they would happily prescribe knock-out meds for longhaul flights and small children.

Hello - I have a similar situation. I am thinking of buying a DVD player for the flight. Being a bit think and new to this how do you start a discussion?

PrettyCandles · 22/06/2008 22:07

Hi JollyD. Click on "Add new thread in this topic" under the title of this thread. Don't forget to give your thread a title.

A DVD player won't cut the mustard with my little maniac, unfortunately. He likes to run and climb and explore and demolish and and and! And the more tired he gets the more frantic he gets.

thanks - its all a bit scary going abroad with a toddler (3). I'm hoping Postman Pat will work his magic

Romy7 · 22/06/2008 22:22

we tried dvd on laptop once.

battery died half way though the wiggles.

we stick to medised now.

jollydiane · 22/06/2008 22:36

Yes I hadn't thought of that. Is anyone else bored of the football. When does it end?

snotbuster · 22/06/2008 22:37

Which airline are you going with? virgin have tv screens on the back of each seat and I'm sure they'd have a children's channel.

jollydiane · 22/06/2008 22:39

Thomsonfly

olyoly · 23/06/2008 00:24

I have friends who give their children Benadryl for flights (not sure of the UK version) but they say to test it first as it has the opposite effect on some! Good luck!
