Scandinavia ideas to combine with Copenhagen for a week next summer

Can anyone suggest a week in Scandinavia which would pair well with a city break in Copenhagen for next summer? No kids.
Theres the cities such as Stockholm and Oslo etc but just wondering if there’s anything unusual or a hidden gem that would pair with it. Up for anything, city or country, only caveat is that I need to be able to get train or short flight to Copenhagen.

There's more than enough to see and do in and around Copenhagen for a week. As well as the city itself you could go north to the beaches and Helsingor, or west to Roskilde for viking stuff - all within an hour or so of Copenhagen. You could also take the train across to Malmo in Sweden, or better still to Lund. Or spend a few says on the beautiful island of Bornholm (train or express bus to Ystad, which you could also visit, and then the ferry across to Bornholm).

You could also go somewhere else in Denmark, which has far more to offer than just Copenhagen. Aarhus is the cool second city. The west coast of Jutland is very scenic, if a bit quiet. Odense, Funen and the islands to the south are typically Danish. Southern Jutland/Schlesvig (Ribe, Tonder, Sonderborg and Flensborg in Germany) would also be interesting for a week, although you'd see most with a car. Nowhere in Denmark is more than a few hours by train from Copenhagen.

Lund is really lovely, it's a medieval university city with a cathedral. There's a lovely outside museum and lots of shops and cafes

I would avoid Malmo tbh

Thanks all.
Should have explained better - we’ve a week in Copenhagen planned already and I’m looking to add a week elsewhere beforehand. I have family in Denmark so I’m looking for somewhere else for some variety (been there a few times already).
Will look at Lund.

Lund is small but nice. Malmö is meh.

I think everyone speaks very highly of Gothenburg? Planning to go there as part of an inter-railing type trip next year.

Malmo is the obviously but probably doesn’t need to be a separate destination- just pop across for the day.

If you want somewhere further away but still Scandinavian, maybe Bergen? Said to be beautiful.

Or if general Nordic is Ok and doesn’t have to be Scandinavia, maybe Helsinki?

We spent a week on Vrängo, off the coast from Gothenburg. It was beautiful, very low-tech and quiet. A bit like being in a famous five novel as no cars, just bikes and pootling around the heath and beaches and eating enormous portions of seafood. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, though - no idea how common it is to have uninterrupted sunshine. Gothenburg was lovely too.

We enjoyed Gothenburg (though TBF we did see U2 so it was bound to be good) and Aarhus.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 18/05/2026 21:58

You can get a train in about 4 maybe just under 5 hours to Hamburg.

IDasIX · 18/05/2026 23:38

Train from Copenhagen runs right up the west coast if Sweden and there are scores of seaside towns and islands to base yourself in or tour around.

A summerhouse by a lake in Sweden is also a dreamy option.

Thought very little of it, haga district is nice, fills a day’s stop from a cruise but about it.

I agree there' splenty to see in Denmark!
Go around Zealand or to Odense, Aalborg, Aarhus. You don't have long and there is a lot to see and do outside of Copenhagen.

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 05:23

Gothenburg or Helsinki would be my choice. Lund if travelling by train.

Natsku · Yesterday 05:27

If Helsinki holds any interest to you then visit Suomenlinna. Its a historical island fortress and very scenic, a world heritage site, and just a short bus ferry trip from helsinki.

HereComesYourMam · Yesterday 09:27

The Gothenburg archipelago is incredibly scenic - hundreds of rocky islands and pretty harbours to explore.

Havanananana · Yesterday 10:42

To widen the options a little, as well as the obvious capital cities of Oslo and Stockholm there are places like Bergen in Norway, or spending a week in southern Sweden based around Ystad. There are also the other capital cities around the Baltic - Tallin, Riga, Vilnius - which while not strictly "Scandinavia" have a very northern European/Hansa atmosphere, and other important Hansa ports such as Lübeck or Gdańsk. Helsinki is also a great, largely overlooked destination.

Try Skane (Lund/Malmo region) Here are some suggestions. DD has been and says it’s a bit like Norfolk/Suufolk.
