First Holiday with an 8 month old - what did you do for food?

We are going on holiday in July as a party of 11 for 10 nights to Tenerife.

I started weaning my son last week at 6 months old, he’s just on 1 a day of fruit purées, and he’s had sweet potato purée, yoghurt etc, but it’s all very new for me and him!

He will be 8 months when we go on holiday (he is 8 months 5 days prior to travel) and I’m worried about feeding him on holiday.

How many times a day do will an 8 month old tend to eat?

I’m worried the veg etc will have salt and seasoning and obviously the porridge at breakfast?

do I just take pouches? Or mash fruit etc? We spend so long at home sterilising everything obviously this will be totally different on holiday!

bottles etc I will take a collapsible washing up bowl and Milton tablets, but obviously it’s the solids part that is worrying me!

Many thanks

I think you can give him bits of what you have, BLW style? Bread, eggs, meat, fruit, veg etc. ideally it wouldn’t have salt but for a one off holiday it’s not the end of the world. Or ask the hotel to cook something for you? I’d also take some pouches too but at 8 months they don’t eat much

You don’t need to sterilise plates etc for solids.

When I took mine on holiday at 10 months, I shared my own food and if it was something my daughter wouldn't eat, I asked for things like a small bowl of cooked vegetables with no seasoning, scrambled eggs, salad sticks, they were usually happy to oblige. On days when we were at places without a restaurant nearby (we didn't go to Tenerife), I bought a jar of baby food, but she wasn't keen on it. Also I bought rice cakes, fruit, cheese in a bag.

We took our daughter away at 7 months and she just ate what we had, the same as we do at home. Taking our son away when he is 8 months this year and will be doing the same.

We used an apartment and cooked the food we’d cook at home. The only thing we brought was a hand mixer to make purées. There’s no need to sterilise anything apart from bottles if used for formula.

If you are staying in a hotel they may offer to do some food for the baby- ours did when we went away when dd1 was 9 months. They did plain veggies and purées for her, but to be fair she really didn’t fancy much food at all other than bread and pasta. She was back to normal when we got home.

Both children have had the same food as us from day 1. I can thoroughly recommend for ease of eating out etc

My child was 10 months old on our first self-catering holiday. I took some dehydrated packet meals, cartons of baby milk and Weetabix. I probably could have bought the same there but at least it was familiar food. With locally bought eggs, cheese and bread it was fine.

StealthMama · 18/05/2026 18:43

We carried on with normal weaning foods when we went out and I brought lots of ready made purées with us.

the biggest problem was the Milton tablets, we used a sterilising machine at home, and the smell/taste of the tablets was so bad/different she would avoid drinking so we spooned it to her which took ages but she was fine.

I took my dd to Spain when she was 7 months old, I did take a few pouches and some baby porridge but generally I just have her a bit of whatever I was eating. She really liked the fresh fruit and I was still breast feeding which was good when out and about.

CaptainCalm · 18/05/2026 18:50

Similarly to other posters we fed ours on the same as we had when eating out on holiday. I didn’t think it mattered if they had a bit of salt etc as a one off.

We did take a few emergency pouches but otherwise it was what we had.

BashfulClam · 18/05/2026 18:52

I saw babies eating beans,Sausage and chips for breakfast on a recent holiday.

We went to Turkey when DD2 was 6 months and she just had bits of whatever we were eating along side milk and we took some pouches and snacks with us.

babies are allowed seasoning? Food doesn’t need to be bland.
DD mainly had bread, fruit, veg, scrambled egg, and pasta.
we also didn’t sterilise plates, bowls and cutlery once she was weaning. Just her bottles for formula

hahabahbag · 18/05/2026 19:05

By 8 months you can give him mashed up ordinary food, bread, fruit, vegetables etc. yes more salt than at home but ok for a short time

hahabahbag · 18/05/2026 19:06

That said mine ate the same as me at home (I went easy on salt and still do today)

BuffaloCauliflower · 18/05/2026 19:06

Just give him normal food cut appropriately (Solid Starts if good for guidance) no need for purées or baby food.
