Can anyone recommend a company or insurance broker for a 76 year old diabetic male with high blood pressure, travelling to the whole of North America for over 30 days this summer. Current quote is over £1000….

Unfortunately he's ticking every box that insurance companies dislike. Age, at risk of heart problems (because of the diabetes and high BP), prolonged stay and the USA!

I'm lower risk and not travelling to the USA but I do have a dodgy medical history. This year I tried the usual companies -staysure, insure&go are ones I've been happy with before - but actually got the best deal through the AA. So if he's a pre-existing customer it might be worth trying them.

I doubt he will do much better.
The risks are age, health , length of trip and the fact that it's America.
It's easy to shop around, you can do a comparison on something like TopCashBack as long as you answer the medical questions accurately.
Also beware that cheap insurance with an unknown insurer might not seem so good if you have to claim.

Have you tried staysure and all clear

Bookfishtea · 14/05/2026 13:53

I was just going to recommend staysure and all clear, used both but nver had to claim.
also look on here you might find something. https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/everyday-money/insurance/travel-insurance-directory#
Unfortunately having medical issues, age, length of stay and destination are going to increase the price so you may find thats reasonable.

Google travel insurance for medical conditions and you should get specialist insurers such as All Clear. However £1000 is not a bad price. Travelling to USA will be seen as very high risk due to the high cost of medical care. Plus his medical condition put him at extra risk of needing treatment

TheChiffchaff · 14/05/2026 15:34

People always recommend specialist insurers such as staysure. They may well be useful if you have very serious health issues such as ongoing cancer treatment but IME (and I've used them) they are more expensive and you can get cover from ordinary insurers for most things as long as you declare them. Diabetes and HBP are common conditions.

Saga or NFU

I have some of the same conditions, and use avantigo.com.
Excellent quote, but there's no way I would go to USA!

Neither would I but he’s going to the World Cup so he’d miss all the group games if he didn’t. He won’t go to Saudi Arabia so this is probably his final one.

Thanks, good to know it’s not an unreasonable price. I wouldn’t let him go without it!
