Capri or amalfi coast

We have one day docking at Naples in July- debating a private tour of amalfi coast in car/ van ( amalfi, ravello, Positano)-possibly lot of time spent in the car or a ferry to capri for the day. It does sound like capri maybe very crowded in July
Any suggestions would be appreciated. ( 2 families kids 10-16).
thank you

Google “Amalfi crowds”. It’s been in the papers recently.

Naples is absolute rubbish. Take the ferry to Sorrento for lunch and shopping; it’s beautiful and easy to walk around.

Sorry to hijack OP but I’ve always wanted to visit the Amalfi coast and looks like there are experts on this thread.

i wanted to ask if first two weeks of October would be a good time to visit or would May be better?

We did early October. We were based in Sorrento but spent a lot of the time on the Amalfi. It was busy but not unbearable. The weather was lovely and fabulous for walking.
The Amalfi is on my bucket list for a re-visit (this is from someone whose holiday mantra is 'never go to the same place twice'. Unless it's Rome, ofc)

Yes, actually Sorrento is the only place abroad that we have ever returned to.

For one port day with 2 families and kids, I’d probably pick Capri. We did a similar short stop once and I was very glad not to spend a big part of it in a van, because the Amalfi coast road is beautiful but can eat up a lot of time in summer. Capri will still be busy in July, but it feels simpler for a one day outing, and you could head up to Anacapri if the main port area feels too hectic. If you really want Amalfi and Positano, I think they’re better by boat than by car. We checked this www.ferryhopper.com/en/ferry-routes/direct/ferry-naples-capri-traghetti when planning

Echoing others who have said Capri has lots of hills/stairs. It’s lovely but super busy and the stairs might be hard with a 10 year old.

id suggest taking the ferry to ischia instead, slightly quieter and still beautiful. I had a fun day at Negombo - sort of a water park made up of natural springs, the pools are all different temperatures. I imagine the kids and teens would enjoy it!

Naples also great to explore, the hop on hop off bus was pretty convenient way to get around.

enjoy!

Thank for all the replies I think we will see how the traffic and heat are nearer the time. A friend is doing the same cruise the week before so will see what she reports back !

I wouldn’t travel all that way for a day. You’re not going to have any time to explore. Naples is a wonderful city and there is so much to do, especially with children that age. I would stay there and do the Amalfi Coast and the islands on another trip and stay for longer.

If you opt to stay in Naples then look out for the subterranean tours, they are so interesting. We did it by candlelight!

You can also do a tour out to the Campi Flegrei which are somewhat terrifying - an active supervolcano in a very built up area. If something blows it is more likely to be that than Vesuvius.

Sorrento might be a more achievable day trip, you can get there on the little train that runs round the bay (also stops at Pompeii)
