Air BNBs - do you usually have to strip bed?

Just looking for others experiences? When staying in an Air BNB are you normally told to strip the beds at the end of your time? Is this an Air BNB thing? Currently in a place for a week costing nearly 1000 .

I wouldn’t want to strip a bed and see what it could be hiding underneath in respect to dodgy stains on the duvet etc. I’d rather not know

Bitzee · 04/05/2026 20:08

I don’t even change the sheets on my own bed, our cleaner does it. Not about to start in holiday accommodation. Wtf does respect have to do with it?! I respect my cleaner, she’s amazing and I love her!

Exactly. And it’s annoying that people
are claiming it’s ’respectful’ to strip beds and therefore if you don’t you are ‘disrespectful’. What rubbish. Let’s not normalise women (as we all know it’s us). Doing even more cleaning on holiday. And then paying a cleaning fee on top of it.

chickenss · 04/05/2026 21:49

No. I only stay for a night or two and the sheets are not that messy and ok to be ‘handled’ by the cleaning person. I think the sheets actually need to be inspected - if they can’t see any stains how are they going to know to treat/ replace them?
I’m also freaked out by seeing the mattress uncovered with the inevitable little hairs or whatnot from the previous guests - may be, I’m staying in cheaper places compared to the rest of you.
There were some stains on one of the pillowcases (even though they smelled washed) in the last place I stayed - I hope they spot them this time around and do something about it. I didn’t leave them a review - which is what I do when I’m not entirely happy with the cleanliness (not great, but don't won’t to ruin their business for them even though I’m personally not happy).

Not normally, no. There was a phase of rentals asking for people to do this 2020/21 but I haven’t seen it as a requirement since then. I’ll normally ensure all utensils/equipment is clean and put away, wipe kitchen surfaces, put the rubbish out and throw all dirty towels in the bath. Doesn’t matter whether there is an extra cleaning fee or not, if there isn’t it just means the price has been included in letting costs.

@chickenss. what do you mean by the sheets need to be seen as to whether there are any stains? Surely if it’s obvious the bed has been used they are all going into a hot wash?

TheM55 · 08/05/2026 23:44

Quick answer, no, not usually. In an Airbnb or rental, I leave it exactly as I found it, with dishwasher empty, rubbish all sorted etc. sinks and surfaces wiped down etc.) but I do not strip the beds, but I would if they asked me to do so, and it would not bother me. I like it when they give you the facilities to do this (brush and pan, cleaning materials, cloths etc.) I do not "clean" hotel rooms but I do leave them tidy, put rubbish in the bin, and "sort of" make the bed (by this I just mean straighten it and throw the duvet over it), check the plugs . I am no "goody two shoes" - and the reason isn't as altruistic as it sounds, for a big proportion of my working life, I have spent it in hotel rooms, and there is one thing that I know for sure - if you do not do that 10 minute tidy up, clean up, check, then go, then you are asking for unnecessary punishment when you realise you have left your charger in the plug, your phone in the bed (twice before I wised up) and your toothbrush in the bathroom.

That's what I've always done and it would never occur to me not to do so. As you say, it's just being respectful.

😂 you’re paying! Do you strip the bed in a hotel? Both have cleaners coming in. This is weird! It’s not your mums house

jetlag92 · 08/05/2026 23:51

It depends on the country. France definitely yes!

Unless asked I wouldn’t strip the bed. But I would leave the accommodation clean and tidy, all rubbish removed etc.

Same here

Edited

I run an airbnb; no one’s expected to strip beds - you’re right, you can’t see if they have stains that need treating if the sheets have been stripped

I think it's because people still think airbnb is always someone's home. Like it was at the beginning. Not local property sucking business it is nowadays.

holidaygall · 09/05/2026 15:46

Well we've just done it. There were specific instructions about not removing the counter pane 😬

This is why I will never book an Air Bnb again. The requirements have been getting more and more, whilst paying a fee. The last one wanted rubbish taken out, recycling sorted, beds stripped, surfaces wiped, fuck that! I've come to holiday, not to do housework.

Airbnb don't make the rules do they? I thought it was up to the individual owners what they want you to do.

I wouldn't want to go on holiday to do housework either but I wouldnt boycott Airbnb because if a specific property. In the good old days of holiday cottages brochures some had those same rules, they weren't invented when the international came along
