August in Croatia/Greece - heat?

Is Croatia likely to be cooler than Greece in August?

We went to Greece (near Kalamata, beach club holiday) last August and will not go again as we missed a horrific 40 deg plus heatwave by one day and the sea was boiling, there were fires nearby etc

I am wondering if all S Europe is off limits now - or whether Croatia will be a bit cooler (appreciate it will still be hot but looking to avoid crippling heatwaves). Have never been to Croatia before- does anyone have any intel?

I think that southern Europe in July August and even September is likely to be scorching.
Have you considered South of France maybe? Ardèche ? Toulon ? Corsica ?

HomeTutor · 04/05/2026 11:56

Its never hot enough for me 😂
I panic if its less than 35. Whats wrong with you all 😆

I'd melt. I think 30 is my limit these days. Pref high 20s.

We had a week in Croatia last August. I like the heat but found it unbearable on 2 days. Even sitting by the pool under an umbrella was too hot.

We went to Croatia last August, the Istrian coast, it didn't get below 35 on any day. AC is an essential.

Visited Montenegro and Croatia in July and it was as hot as Hades.

We did Dubrovnik area of Croatia early August last year. It was much more pleasant temp wise than western Europe. High twenties, maybe pushing 30 in the city but still lovely. It's a beautiful country and I much prefer the Adriatic to the Med.

I think Kalamata gets particularly hot because it’s mainland and in between “fingers” of land - so doesn’t really get much sea breeze.

We also stayed in that area in August last year but further down the coast (near Stoupa) and high up on a hill, it wasn’t too bad temperature wise.

We were in Croatia in July the year before and it was 35+. Boiling.

If you pick an island it will be windier and cooler still. Cyclades especially get pretty breezy. (I’d avoid anything too far south like Crete or Rhodes). However the temps can still easily be 35+ if the breeze drops.

If you want to be sure of cooler temperatures you need to be north of Bordeaux IME - and then you risk it being cooler or rainier, a bit warmer than the UK but not guaranteed sun like the Med.

Overall I think July gets more heatwaves than August. But it’s a matter of luck.

I've been to Croatia in July/August 3 times. It's been 30-35 degrees consistently. That's been perfect for me to flop by the sea or pool (under an umbrella) and do some sightseeing in the early mornings and evenings. Daytime boat trips have been fine as the breeze cools me down enough and intersperse with dips in the sea.

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking of going on a Nielson holiday and the destinations are Greece, Croatia and Sardinia. I imagine there's not much in it although mainland Greece bit more likely to be 40+

I think there’s not much in it weather wise or at least not predictably.

In your shoes I would choose on the basis of looking into the different Nielson resorts and which gets best reviews (do a search on MN!) and suits what you want - eg some are better for older teens, some have better food, some better for sailing or tennis etc.

We went to halkidiki last August. It wasn't as hot as the Greek islands we've previously visited at the same time. It's mainland Greece, so a bit further north. Maybe have a look into there.

We stayed in Athens last Aug but on the coast and we had a lovely breeze, so it was perfect for us

DemonsandMosquitoes · 05/05/2026 20:31

We were in Split last August. One day it hit 40c as we were visiting a national park. It was like a cauldron! Unbearable.

TallagallaPenguin · 05/05/2026 20:48

Im def finding southern Europe is impossible for us in the summer now. I can’t enjoy it if it’s over 30 on a regular basis - it’s just too much.
We had a great holiday up high in the alps - high altitude helped.

We did Neilson Croatia in June two years ago, a couple of days of thunderstorms both weeks cooled the temperatures markedly, they then “recovered” until the next one. Swimming pools were cool to pleasant, sea a little warmer. Greece (various resorts) and Sardinia in September has definitely been warmer, the sea noticeably so. Depending on the resort the pool can still be icy cold though (Messini and Rhodes, I’m looking at you!) We are going back to Croatia this year, end of August/early September. I’d agree with the PP to say choose the resort based on your preference for activities, walking distance to restaurants or days out rather than anything else. Our preference has changed over the years, with the addition of DD for example. DM me if you want more info.
