We are planning a trip in September, doing the NC500 (in a car, not a motorhome/camper van).

It will be my husband's birthday during the trip and he said he'd like to be on the Isle of Skye at that time. We want to stay for two nights.

No preference as to where on the island to stay, but would like a sea view if possible. Either self catering or B&B/hotel.

Budget of up to £250 a night.

We stayed at Coruisk House by Elgol which was lovely and had an amazing breakfast included. They also did evening meals but very expensive, something like £100 per person so we didn't try that but sure the food would be amazing. More remote location with lots of sheep on the way. Close to boats.

We stayed in Portree, which is obviously busier than the previous suggestions. We stayed in a house, don't recall a sea view, but there are hotels down by the harbour with a proper seaview. I was really unwell with morning sickness, that is my overshadowing memory of the trip, but Skye is absolutely gorgeous.

Duntulm Castle Hotel or Floodigarry Hotel, both near the top of the Trottenish peninsula are in stunning locations. But I haven't been up there for 15 years and I know things have got a lot busier/more expensive since then.

Greshornish also looked nice but we didn't stay there, went for Coruisk house in the end but would try Greshornish another time as loved Skye. We were there in 2024 but at Easter so not too busy, very cold on the sea then.

September is a brilliant time for Skye — the summer crowds have thinned, the midges are winding down, and you get those long golden-hour evenings over the Cuillins. For a birthday treat with a sea view, I would second the Waternish area — it is quieter than Portree but close enough to drive to Dunvegan Castle, Neist Point, and the Fairy Pools without too much back-and-forth. The Stein Inn (oldest inn on Skye) is a lovely spot for a birthday dinner, and Loch Bay restaurant nearby has a Michelin star.

For two nights at your budget, a self-catering cottage might actually stretch further than a hotel — you get a kitchen for lazy breakfasts before heading out, and many of the converted crofts around Waternish and Glendale have genuinely stunning sea views that the hotels cannot match. If you are open to self-catering, it is worth comparing across a few letting agencies rather than just checking one. I have used holidaycottages.ai for this — it pulls listings from several agencies into one search so you can filter by sea view, dates, and budget without opening ten tabs. Might save you a bit of time, especially as September availability on Skye books up quickly.

Whatever you choose, do not miss the drive up the Trotternish Ridge (Old Man of Storr, Quiraing) — it is spectacular in September light. Happy birthday to your DH!

Thank you 😊

Some lovely suggestions there.

Unfortunately, we didn't realise just how popular the NC500 is, and I think we've left it a bit late to plan the trip, as a lot of places don't have availability on the dates we'll be travelling.

We'll have a last attempt at securing places tonight/tomorrow, but if unsuccessful, we may postpone the trip until next year.
