What time would you arrive at Manchester Airport for a 6.10am flight?

Flying from Manchester to Spain on Sunday at 6.10am 😴
We live about 40 minutes drive away

We're travelling with hand luggage only. Getting dropped off

What time would you get to the airport?

At that early hour, I feel every 5 minutes in bed counts.

I know it used to be 2 hours. I do travel a lot but always find myself with ages to spare and that's normally in school hols.

Would arriving at 5.10 be sufficient?

We went through a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday morning, it was a bit later in the day and it was T2 but the security queue was none existent. I wouldn't risk 5:10, but I think 4:30am is fine though. Check on Saturday night for the number of departures planned at that time of day, just to gauge how many people will be around, and just go from there.

Feelingworried26 · 13/04/2026 15:25

90 minutes

thismummydrinksgin · 13/04/2026 15:34

We did a day trip from Birmingham, no luggage to check in and arrived an hour before, had time for breakfast too.

BambinaCucina · 13/04/2026 15:40

I wouldn't get there less than 2 hours before.

I always go into boots and get sandwiches, drinks and lollies for the flight/after we get to th4 destination. And we have breakfast in the airport before we leave.

4am. 2 hours before doesn’t change based on the time of day the flight is. If you don’t like getting up then pay for a better flight time. The early wake up is the price you pay for booking the cheaper flight. And surely it’s worth being tired instead of worrying you’d miss the flight?

How do you magic up flight times to suit everyone. Often there is only one a day to certain destinations.

PlaneMum19 · 13/04/2026 15:55

The crew arrive 1hour before push back time. Boarding commences at -35 that gives you 25 mins to get through security. Personally as someone who was cabin crew for 7 years. That’s not long enough.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/04/2026 15:57

We are doing a 6.50 flight in a couple of weeks. Staying at ds's and planning on getting there for 4 at the very latest. (I.am a bit of a worrier though so this may be 3.30)

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 13/04/2026 16:26

Allow a couple of hours at your destination to clear customs. We flew into Lisbon last week and waited two hours 20 mins going in. When we left we got to the airport four hours early and were front of queue. Going out was an hour queue for first a machine and then another queue for a human. It could not have been more badly organised if they tried. I cannot imagine how those with young children coped, it would have been hell.

Perpetualscroller · 13/04/2026 16:59

It’s also the Manchester Marathon on Sunday. Don’t know if those road closures would affect your journey, but thought I’d mention it just in case.

Badballerina · 13/04/2026 17:24

430 for me but our local airport is quiet

jazzybelle · 13/04/2026 17:35

AD1509 · 13/04/2026 10:59

There’s many cheap hotels at the airport- I
would stay there the night before and get some sleep.

I agree. We always stay overnight and arrive at the hotel between 5pm-6pm. You can then have a lovely relaxing evening, dinner in the hotel or airport and not have to worry about getting to the airport in time.

Friendlygingercat · 13/04/2026 18:40

Airport queues are not like queues for a venue. Queue design is inconsistent and often unfair. Airports expect people to speak up if they’re at risk of missing a flight. Security and airline staff don’t see this as queue‑jumping. They see it as avoiding rebooking costs, avoiding stranded luggage and protecting the connection network. You should not hesitate to step forward, politely tell staff you have a tight connection and ask for their help. Planes taking off with empty seats are expensive for airlines. The staff are trained to keep the line moving and to prioritise those with a deadline.

Manchester Airport rewards quiet, tactical behaviour even more than most UK airports because its queues are poorly signposted, irregularly staffed, and often merge in ways that create natural ambiguity. That ambiguity is exactly what you can use. Staff often triage aggressively. They routinely pull people forward for “flight closing”, “special assistance”, or “fast track overflow”. If your anywhere near when a group gets called forward you can quietly tag onto the end. Staff assume you are part of the cluster. At Manchester, the queue often splits into two or three lanes that funnel into a single scanner area. Standing near the funnel point lets you merge naturally into the line when movement begins. The merge is chaotic and staff dont police it. People are concentrating on trays, belts and liquids and not who was where. No one knows exactky who was next and probably wont notice. Even of they do they will rarely challenge you for merging into the line.

To be fair, I often check flights from Manchester for DS and the times are not convenient, too early or too late, nothing in between.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 13/04/2026 19:36

4.30 would be fine at my local airport but sounds like Manchester is much busier at the moment so I’d go 3.45/4.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 13/04/2026 19:42

Pearlstillsinging · 13/04/2026 11:51

There's almost bound to be roadworks/road closures in the vicinity. I would book into an hotel the evening before to be on the safe side and ensure a nice relaxed start to the day.

She lives 40 minutes away. As a Pp said why pay £150+ for an extra 20 mins of disturbed sleep?

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 13/04/2026 19:42

LeedsLoiner · 13/04/2026 12:02

If you can afford it stop the night before in one of the many hotels that are within walking distance of the terminals.

Sigh. Not saying it again.

AgnesMcDoo · 13/04/2026 19:43

2 hours before

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/04/2026 19:45

I live very close by.
there are millions of flights leaving 6-7am and the airport will be heaving. I’d want to be there at 4. Maybe slightly later if hand baggage only.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/04/2026 19:46

I live less than an hour away and still prefer to stay at an airport hotel the night before if we are flying at 6am ish.

It really reduces any of my worries about delays or diversions on the motorway and I agree that, at that time, every extra 5 minutes in bed counts!

When we have cases we then do the free twilight check in and get rid of the need to line up for bag drop in the morning too.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/04/2026 19:47

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/04/2026 13:03

You do the EES on arrival at the European airport, and again on leaving the European airport. Nothing has changed in the UK

Indeed there are no immigration formalities leaving the UK.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 13/04/2026 19:48

4am

Stillfatstillmiserable · 13/04/2026 19:50

I’d want to be there by 3.30am!

OnTheBoardwalk · 13/04/2026 19:51

I live 30 mins and like a lot of PPs have said I would book a hotel or leave myself a lot more time to get to the airport, anything can happen on the roads round there

also as PP said it’s the Manchester marathon on Sunday with lots of roads closing from 3am and lots of extra vehicles in the area which could really impact you depending on direction of travel

What time would you arrive at Manchester Airport for a 6.10am flight?
booksunderthebed · 13/04/2026 20:01

I fly a lot from Manchester but usually in the evening and with Ryanair and its dead. Never have to wait at security at all. Once our flight was delayed - ryanair texted us to let us know - but when we got to the airport security had closed! (they kindly reopened it for us and some other passengers)

They have this weird thing going on (or did until 3 weeks ago, last time I flew) where you go through security in T1 and then walk through a desolate empty terminal and then go through a mile of corridors and end up in T3. Why you can't do security in the T3 building is beyond me.

Landing at least is a pleasure, no walking at all!

I took a morning flight from T2 a couple of months ago but not that early, more like 10am and it was fine.

`Unfortunately you will probably have to get there 2 hours before and than more than likely sit for 1 hour at the gate. So frustrating early in the morning.

I don't know why there aren't more evening flights, I love them. I don't mind at all landing at 11pm or so. I'll be in bed soon enough and all refreshed by the morning.

Would arriving at 5.10 be sufficient?

Yes if you're prepared to miss your flight.

You know there's a reason that they say to arrive 2 hours beforehand don't you?

There used to be an airline documentary series (EasyJet?) with regular footage of passengers cutting it rather fine, and being told their gate had closed - this post reminded me of that!

5.10am arrival is waaaay too late
