Brandenburg Airport Berlin and the new Entry/Exit System (EES). Have you been there recently? Are they getting to grips with it?

Has anyone come through Brandenburg Airport and had to register for the EES recently, and can tell me what it’s like? I’ve heard/read a number of stories about difficulties and delays, and I’m wondering if it’s got worse/better in the last couple of weeks. Perhaps the staff are getting used to the system and dealing with issues...?

The new EES system has been brought in gradually since last year, and became compulsory on 10 April. It requires non EU travellers to register for it by scanning their fingerprints and face on arrival at their destination airport. This is making getting through passport control much slower for now.

I’m flying with Ryanair on Monday week, from Stansted to Brandenburg Terminal 2. I’ve chosen a flight that gets in later in the afternoon as I thought it might be quieter than arriving mid morning. To help travellers register faster, Brandenburg has installed a number of self service booths to do the scanning, but apparently not all of them work…

My return flight to Stansted the following Monday doesn’t look much easier. I have to take some hold luggage, and the baggage drops only open two hours before the flight. There have been long queues to get through passport control and security. Some people who have had to wait to drop bags off then queue for a long time have actually ended up missing their flights.

Apparently everything is made worse by the new(ish) Brandenburg Airport not being up to the Germans’ usual high standards of efficiency and design. The signage and layout are bad, the staff are scarce and rude, etc. etc. etc!

I’ve got some health issues (not bad enough to need assisted boarding) and I’m travelling alone, so I’m a bit worried about possibly having to stand for long periods, running out of water and needing the loo.

Does anyone have any recent experiences, and any hints or tips? Thanks!

I'm also intrigued by the shredded red sheet sculpture hanging from the ceiling in the Terminal. Does anyone know what it represents? Do the locals have any good names for it?

My 20 year old daughter just travelled to and from Brandenburg in the last week - all smooth sailing, EES only took a couple of minutes, and no delays through security. She is autistic with low support needs and found the whole thing very easy and much less stressful than she was anticipating, so hopefully you will too.

No idea about the sculpture though!

How does the face scanning work? I dont have a symmetrical face, so have had issues before with this type of machines.

We went on 28th March. Entry was very quick, scanning machines were working and then passports were checked and stamped. All 4 of us through in about 10 mins.

Newnametrt · 12/04/2026 09:03

I arrived in Berlin last week and it took 90 mins to get through Passport control. It was a two stage process, with a machine that scanned passports, fingerprints and took your photo, and then all of these details rechecked again by border official in person. I had a message from Ryanair about staff shortages at passport control so that may have had an impact.

The sculpture is called The Magic Carpet and I've found some blurb:

"A large, red carpet made of metal mesh flutters through the air of the check-in hall. The work embodies the motif of the flying carpet, which itself comes with all sorts of associations. In the airport, it acts as a membrane between the known and the unknown, reality and imagination, memory and hope."

Well I guess that sums up an airport that apparently came in at 5 billion euros over budget. It's in Terminal 1 though so if you're on a Ryanair flight, no chance of contemplating it while queueing for passport control in T2.

Good to know that some people have been getting through quickly.

For those wearing glasses - specs on or off for the face scan? I'm wondering if the tint of my reactolite lenses might confuse the scanners and stop me going through next time.

It just takes a picture of your face. There is no "scanning". (I have seen claims that it's an iris scan, like they use in spy movies to open the secret door. All tosh.) If for some reason the camera (or your face) isn't working, EES will extract the photo from the chip on your passport.

If you're interested, this is all laid out in Article 15 of Regulation (EU) 2017/2226, which you can download from https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02017R2226-20210803. There is no mystery about EU Regulations and Directives - they are all published on the EU's website and they are actually not too hard to read. Five minutes with the actual legal document is worth many hours of "know-all in the pub"-type discussions with people on social media.

I’ve landed in Berlin tonight and the whole passport control process was 15 minutes max. However, it was a 9pm landing and there was no queuing

BlackSquirrels · 13/04/2026 15:09

Good to hear that it's a photo of your face rather than a scan. I think I might chance it with my glasses on. If you take them off for things like this, it's difficult if there are instructions to be read as you can't see them...

Just been through Prague. Glasses off.

Elizabeta · 13/04/2026 19:37

I went to BER over Easter. Easy peasy, 10 min wait.

Plump82 · 13/04/2026 19:41

You definitely need to take your glasses off. My husband kept his on and was told abruptly it causes issues. Not ideal when he can't see a thing without them!

MaybeNotBob · 13/04/2026 20:03

Glasses off. Came through Brandenburg a couple of months ago and it was hideous, both directions. I guess it's down to how busy it is, and how many officers they have on duty.

Thank you for your detailed post. Always happy to read the actual legislation. As you say they are normally well written. I quote the UK Equality Act protected characteristics page at least 2-3 times per month. The actual page is so clear!

Fends · 14/04/2026 07:24

If everyone chances it with their glasses on then it’ll take longer 😂

BlackSquirrels · 14/04/2026 09:30

I'll definitely take my glasses off then! Thanks for that.

And thank you everybody for your help.

I've downloaded the Berlin Airport app (called BER Airport) so I'll be able to see how many other non EU flights are arriving/departing at the same time as mine, which should give me more idea of how long I'll have to wait.
