Holiday issues / cancellation!

Hi, looking for some advice!

We (myself, DH and DD) booked a package holiday via Jet2 with my sister and brother in law.

We are all under the 1 booking but we took out separate insurance policies (we get ours via our bank). My sister has been told she needs surgery and will not be fit enough to fly in time for us going.

What are our options here? I am not sure we can cancel via our insurance since technically the people on our policy can go, but not sure my sister can cancel via her policy if we decide to still go ahead.

I think ideally we would cancel and rebook at a later time - but would we be able to get a full refund? We are meant to fly out in a few weeks time.

Any advice would be great- thank you

Can you just contact Jet2 and move the date?

yes check your policy for travel companion cancellation cover

Burningbud1981 · 11/04/2026 18:45

Sorry posting again as something happened to my comment. Check your policy most cover cancellation if your travel companion is unable to travel due to injury or illness.

Thanks all - so even though she is on a different insurance policy, she would still be classed as a 'travel companion' on mine?

I looked on the Jet2 website and it states we wouldn't be entitled to any refund due to the date being too close, so I think the only option would be via travel insurance. We are so excited for the holiday but just not sure if we are best cancelling for now and rebooting at a later date, or going ahead just the 3 of us - but not sure how that would affect her claiming for lost costs etc?

@SolemnlySwear2010 Check your policy wording it should have a definitions section but your Sister should be classed as your travel companion. She would only be able to claim for her portion of the trip costs.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 11/04/2026 19:01

Thanks - so she could claim from her insurance for half the cost, and I could claim our insurance for the remaining half?

What would happen to the booking if she chooses to claim but we decide to go on the holiday (me, DH and DD). Would this be able to happen, or would the holiday be cancelled if she claims?

Whoever is the lead passenger needs to speak to Jet2 or the travel agent if you booked via them to discuss options. Do you still want to go without them?

SolemnlySwear2010 · 11/04/2026 19:09

I am the lead passenger on the booking - we booked directly via Jet2 online, funnily enough because we had a holiday cancelled with TUI and wanted something easier!

We are in two minds re going without them - we (myself, DH and DD) are all in desperate need of a break and this holiday is much needed due to personal circumstances, however - the holiday would be more enjoyable with my sister/ brother in law and I think we would feel guilty if we went without them

@SolemnlySwear2010 I’m not sure you’d need to speak to Jet2. It may depend on your departure dates if it’s classed as a cancellation if one party doesn’t travel

PurpleNightingale · 11/04/2026 19:19

I'm not sure your travel insurance will cover your cancellation costs. Your sister (if she had been honest about her medical situation) would be covered for her trip being cancelled but she isn't part of your policy and I don't think she would be within the usual circle of immediate family they'd expect you to need to cancel for (spouse, parent or child at a guess). It's also not an end of life situation. You have said yourself you can go ahead without them just fine, you'd just feel it would be less fun. Insurance would be for unavoidable loss, not an opted for one if that makes sense.

MissAmbrosia · 11/04/2026 19:21

I think you need to go without them, Have you rung and asked yet?

LIZS · 11/04/2026 19:25

Travel insurer will expect you to mitigate their cost by negotiating with the tour operator - whether that is any partial refund (flight taxes and pre-booked excursions for example) or charge to rearrange for a future date.

Thanks all - haven't spoken to anyone yet as she was only admitted into hospital this morning.

If she claims in her end and we decide to still go - would we be expected to pay any extra? They had their own room etc so i am hoping we won't be any money out since the holiday was expensive enough in the first place

Depends if that materially changes any accommodation or discounts applied.
