Xmas on our own

For the first time in nearly forty years OH and myself will be alone at Xmas this year. I have no idea what we could do but I don’t want to be at home on our own. A cruise to the Caribbean appeals or a holiday to the sun or somewhere cultural. Has anyone got any suggestions? Being surrounded by happy families will be depressing.

There are cruises and hotels/ resorts that are adults only. I don’t have links to hand but a quick google will flag them up. You might even find Christmas is less expensive than other times because a lot of the people who might want a family/ children free holiday the rest of the year will still do the traditional family get together at Christmas.

I know an older couple who went to Barbados for Christmas just the two of them, they loved it!

Why not look at a UK adults only festive break. You could do a cruise another time. Might be surrounded by families on a cruise.
Or eat out somewhere local then home to PJs and favourite films. Make some new traditions.

We have had every Xmas for 30 years "on our own", so I don't see the problem - you just relax and do your own thing. Nothing depressing about it.
But a holiday at Christmas can be fun - maybe to somewhere that doesn't celebrate- we loved Marrakesh for this reason, sunny days tho chilly evenings.
But my favourite Christmas holiday is a European city break, because they don't close everything down for days on end and I love 25th December in an art gallery..... the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam was my all time favourite on Xmas Day. But I'd also recommend Vienna, Venice and Rome.

We go to Estepona in Southern Spain for a three weeks mid December to January. (retired no kids). We stay in my sis and brother in laws apartment (lucky us) but you could choose air bnb or hotel. It is a lovely town, not full of all day brekkies and the like. It's got a great walkway all the down the coast and you could walk as much or as little of it as you want. Weather can be mixed. Plenty of restaurants and options to see other towns around like Ronda and Seville, and of course Malaga city itself.

Obviously because we know the place well we are happy to be there. I will say that in Spain Christmas is not celebrated like it is in UK. It is very low key which suits us down to the ground. Their big day is January 6, the day of the Kings and is child centred. So everything is open (more or less) on Christmas Day, shops, restaurants, buses running and so on. Not everything mind, but most things. So life is just like any other day there.

Short flight, 40 minutes down the autovia and we're there.
