Hi
New the fourm
Looking for recommendations for a holiday with a 6 month old .
We absolutely love Greece and fans of skiathos so that is our back up if we can’t find anything else.
We don’t want to drive, so want an area that’s lovely beach and authentic restaurants in a close proximity.
Nothing tacky or loud want more authenticity.
It does not need to be Greece.
Open to suggestions 🙏

Spain and Portugal are very child friendly.

A baby aged six months won’t care where they are! 😁

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t go abroad with a baby of that age. Babies aren’t really suited to flying, what with their delicate ears and the disruption to their routines. And if they cry, everyone will be disturbed. Then there’s the heat when you get there. Babies can’t control their body temperature like we can.

When our babies were young, we went to Wales or Devon. It’s a completely different type of holiday with a young baby. Everything is about them and their feeding and sleeping needs.

Everyone is different though. I expect you’ll get some recommendations from posters saying they went abroad with young babies and it was amazing!

When are you going?

Forgottenmyphone · 12/04/2026 05:56

Cavtat in Croatia feels very authentic. It’s only a short transfer from Dubrovnik airport and it’s stroller-friendly.

What time of the year are you going? Greece/Skiathos are great, parts of Crete could work (more Chania than the other side). We went to Port de Pollensa in Majorca at around that age, which was lovely, I personally think that’s a great age to go with a baby, it all becomes harder work - including authentic restaurants - when they get mobile. 16 months ish to 3 years particularly tricky!

MikeRafone · 12/04/2026 06:05

I’d pick short flight & easy quick transfer

Majorca fits the criteria for both with many resorts

Italy! Babies are so welcome there. Six months is a fantastic age to travel with a baby as they are still very portable. Easy to take them on a plane. They’re happy wherever they are as long as they’re with you. Don’t worry about it being hot, local babies survive perfectly well in hotter climates.

If you fly, take a change of clothes for you as well as the baby in your hand luggage. Sometimes the change of pressure does not go well.

Do you definitely want to go abroad?

We've got a baby under one and we are having a UK holiday this year because, thinking about it, I decided it would be a much more relaxed time if we could just load up the car with all the stuff we need and drive somewhere with a sandy beach on the doorstep. You don't need a lot with a baby in terms of things to see and do.

We've got a lovely modern self catering house with a big garden and hot tub for me and DH. We can take all the stuff we need and just relax. No worries about travel cots and high chairs and sterilisers and what brand of nappies we'll be able to get once we're there. We've got it all.

We do like going abroad and will in future, but the first holiday for us was more about having time as a family, and making that as easy as possible - it didn't matter so much about flying to another country.

It all seemed much less faff and stress to stay in the UK, and these days you're pretty much as likely to get nice weather as going abroad. The climate here has changed and it's much more guaranteed good weather in June/July.

Having said all that, if you do go abroad, I would highly recommend a villa in Skala, Kefalonia!

We found smaller, family owned hotels much easier when our DC were young. They were more flexible and helpful

I love threads like this when people say not to take babies of that age on a plane…
it’s actually easier to take a baby on a plane to Spain than a 2-3 hour car journey. Babies will be held, fed and sleep on a plane. For a car journey of the same length you will need to factor in multiple stops, as well as allow for extra stops in case baby needs changed, held, etc.

we took our youngest to Turkey for a friends wedding at 6 months and she was a dream (and she’s my child who didn’t sleep well at home!) she fed and slept for the entire flight, it wasn’t super hot when we were there. We took a pushchair that folded up and fit in the overhead locker so used it right up to the plane door and straight away when we got off.

we did find that all inclusive resorts worked best for us (we also had a 3 year old at the time) as everything was to hand whenever we needed it.

Two holidays stand out to ya from when the kids were little, if you want to drive, cook, have space etc we loved camping le Paradis near St Leon I. The Vezere valley, part of Dordogne. A lovely site with lots for littlies and space etc, also lots nearby to potter around and you can rent tents/cabins from them.
if you want AI then our favourite was Mark Warner for the fab childcare, they had DS at 5 months (just at end of maternity leave) every be afternoon and evening crèche so we had adult dinner every night, really lovely!! Rooms and hotel were set up for babies with kitchens to sterilise etc…

Netherlands. There’s a nice holiday park there and you can get ferry. I wouldn’t fancy taking a baby to a hot country yet. Staycation here maybe Devon or Cornwall? Maybe France by the sea.

When are you going?

This is key.

Paaseitjes · 12/04/2026 09:54

6 month old on plane is no problem and easier when you get there because not very mobile. Its a nightmare if the weather is more than 26° though. Mine doesn't like AC, suncream isn't good for them, they won't wear hats, the pram is too hot, they get constipated from sweating too much, you have to stay inside pretty much until bedtime... We go to the med in November instead now and stay in northern Europe in the summer.
