Not exactly short haul - but it is a large country. Where/what are you wanting to do: it is a "world in one country", so you need to give a bit more detail about waht you want to know.

It would be better to go during their summer, as you'll get better weather. Are there any particular parts you're intending to visit?

one of the best holidays I have ever had. We went before children and drove from Jo'burg to kruger then to cape town - fantastic! Very dangerous drive to do independently but we did not have kids and wanted to see as much of the country as we can. we went in 2004 so things I understand it are now even less stable but it is a very beautiful country with huge diversity and very interesting.

I would really recommend going to kruger and cape town the wine lands (in particular Spier as you can stroke cheetah). It is a trip of a life time. Fly between places rather than driving (I think we flew back from Cape town to Jo'burg with a an equivalent to Ryan air called garuda I think) as it is much safer.

If you go have your wits about you and have a great time

No jet lag as they are on the same time zone

It's opposite to ours, if you go in December, you'll generally get good weather. It's probably a good idea to go in November, as it's not too hot and the jacaranda blossom is out.

I'd think very carefully about going there though. It's a wonderful, beautiful country, but some parts, such as Jo'burg are very unsafe. I was also nearly the victim of a mugging in Durban. I'm not trying to put you off, but it's something you need to know if you're thinking of visiting SA.

Whatever you do, don't go to Cape Town in December. You won't be able to move for the crowds.

If you want to go in Aug, it will be cold in the mornings and evenings. I'd suggest going to a game park - Kruger is big but parts are malaria areas, others not. Otherwise try the Pilansberg - lovely park, much smaller and close to Sun City if you're wanting a hotel type of experience too.

Don't bother spending any time in Jhb. Cape Town is lovely but weather won't be good in Aug. Eastern Cape is nice in parts (I'm biased as that's where I'm from) but again, not going to be fab weather.

August in Cape Town can be very rainy and pretty chilly. But then we can also have glorious days. But def not beach weather. Best time in my mind is October and March. Not too hot and nice and quiet, but if you want sunny and warm then anytime from October to April should be fine.
