I have been before, a lot of times actually but because family live there i think I've got a different experience as not gone off and done too much on my own, am usually part of a group.
Anyway just me and dh off there this weekend for 4 nights - he's only ever been twice and not for a while so I'm looking for tips for us as tourists - what's unmissable in your opinion?
We're going out to Howth and swimming at the Forty Foot if we're feeling brave but not much else planned yet. Weather looks awful 🙃

We like walking, eating, drinking, live music, history etc

Thanks!

History:
Kilmainham Gaol - best experience IMO- books out quickly but you may get returns if you check online early on day you wish to go.
14 Henrietta St
Epic and Jeanie Johnston
National Museum (check out bog bodies)
Dublinia and Christchuch Cathedral and St Patrick's Cathedral
Trinity and Book of Kells
GPO
Dublin Castle
Glasnevin Cemetry (and Botanic Gardens) if you're northside

Live Music:
Whelans/Olympia/Vicar St

Theatre: Gaiety/Abbey/Gate/Bord Gais. Bewleys cafe do cheap one hour lunchtime plays. Smock Alley also - small theatre reasonably priced.

Walks: St Stephens Green, walk around south city centre: Southwilliam St, Drury St/Georges/Aungier/Camden St and surrounds- plenty of shops/restaurants/pubs to explore.

Other: MOLI (and Iveagh Gardens), National Gallery, Museum of Curiosities, Dart to Malahide (Castle & beach), IMMA

Howth is lovely - plenty of good seafood restaurants. Make sure you do cliff walk.
Temple Bar worth a look during the day but avoid at night - total tourist trap.

Hope the weather picks up 🙏

What lovely ideas! I've done a fair few of them but there's some id not have thought of. Wondered about the gaol instead of one of our walks as the weather looks so bad - better look for tickets!
Tomorrow is a family day but after that we're free for a few days so hope to pack lots in.
Thanks 😊

I really enjoyed the Guinness Storehouse, way more than I expected to.

I liked going to the Temple Bar, I know it gets slated but a bar in there at lunch with live music was fun.

The Gingerbread Man was a really lovely pub.

The Viking experience was wretched. The Dead Zoo was cool.

Fire House was a good dining experience.

Definetely the Leprechaun Museum 🤣🤣

AlphaApple · 02/04/2026 19:59

National Portrait Gallery is also worth a potter about in.

Other pubs worth a visit:

Stags Head
Mulligans, Poolbeg St
Brazen Head
Palace Bar

Ahhhh the brazen head was one of the last places I went with my mum before she passed away ❤️ I love it there. You've reminded me of a really cool pub in temple bar I think, near Rory Gallagher street, all dusty and candles and dark ahhh gonna drive me mad trying to remember it

The Mini Museum is well worth a visit, just by St Stephen’s Green.
