Bernese Oberland with kids - tips and costs

Has anyone had much experience in the region?

Family holiday to Switzerland booked for August. Staying in Adelboden. Self catering to hopefully keep the costs down. First holiday abroad in years so the kids (10 & 5) are really excited. So are we but apprehensive about the costs.

What would people estimate we should budget for self catering costs? We will make packed lunches and eat dinner at home and probably have 2 or 3 meals in restaurants/cafes.

Also one of the family is vegetarian but not keen on cheese, is this going to be a total nightmare for food?!

Finally what would your must-do summer activities be for kids of that age? We're hoping to go up the Jungfrau on the train and the big one will enjoy hikes with his dad. Small one not a great walker so will need to keep things manageable for them.

Not much specific advice about costs (I always say "when you visit 🇨🇭 take sandwiches" 😆) other than that I hear cafes at Migros supermarkets spoken well of.

I assume you're flying rather than driving? Shame, when we go camping in France I take a box full of emergency vegetarian supplies- Sosmix, peanut butter (available but strangely expensive in France) etc.

I'd recommend a day out in Bern though- it's a pleasant city, and you can look for all the little bears everywhere (symbol of the city). Plus, I am intrigued by all the Instagram videos I see about people jumping in the River Aare and letting the current whiz them along- take a look!

Great tips, thank you!
We did think about driving through from the Calais ferry, but in the end decided to fly & hire a car, as it would take so long to drive.

I'm really pissed off that all the pointy interesting bits are on the far side of France (especially as I live down the end of Cornwall!!) I did drive down to the Pyrenees a couple of years ago, but it was indeed a bit much.

My DD’s top 3 things to do in Switzerland are:

  • Kugelweg marble fun
  • Transport museum in Lucerne
  • Summer coasters (rodelbahns)

This link takes you to the marble run, but the website has some brilliant family friendly walks with some amazing playgrounds, musical hikes and sensory trails. Definitely check out whether it’s worth investing in a Swiss pass

Will the ski lifts be open? They often are in the summer and it's fun to ride up and then walk down.
