I holidayed here as a child a lot, have very fond childhood memories and I would love to go this year with my family.

how easy is jersey to get around, do we need to hire a car or are taxis reasonable?

Would love some hotel recommendations for luxurious 5*? I would prefer one with a sea view and a pool for the kids.

any recommendations or knowledge is very welcome.

We were there 2 weeks ago, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Didn't need a car, there's a very good bus service.

We just used a taxi to & from the airport. I think it was c.£30 on a Sunday, & a bit less weekdays.
We stayed at Pomme D'Or, highly recommend it. There are sea-view rooms, but we didn't bother. No pool, but the location is excellent. Right in the middle of St.Helier, with many restaurants close by, + 3 minute walk to the Bus Station.

There's a visitor pass that gives entry to the major attractions, £42 per adult & well worth it.

I would echo the bus service is good. Most of them go via the centre so it’s worth staying reasonably close.

Pomegranatemum · 28/03/2026 19:27

We used taxis and the cost did mount up. Personally I think you’d see more of Jersey with a car, but if you only want to go to a few places then the buses should be fine.
It’s a lovely place - the castles and beaches are stunning. St Helier is quite commercial though.

Thank you all for replying, I had hoped there would be a good public transport system as I would prefer not to rely on a car. Interesting comment on St Helier too I was looking around that area as I was worried on getting around so thought it may be easier.

fab shout on the visitor pass, my history geek in my is desperate to see the war tunnels!

We spent a week and just travelled by bus. We bought a 7 day bus pass. Most buses do go through St Helier, so it would be preferable to be close to the bus station as you'll otherwise spend a lot of time going in and out.

Some places have a less frequent bus service and it's also less frequent on Sundays, so if there is somewhere you particularly want to go, probably worth checking in advance.

Lovely island.
Can't help much as we take a car, self cater, and avoid St Helier!

As well as the Merton St Hellier has the Grand the Royal Yacht and the Hotel de France which all have pools in the spa area.

I think that the Atlantic might be your best bet though- out of town but I seem to recall on a bus route - has an outdoor pool and all the sea views you could ask for. It does interconnecting family rooms.

My absolute favourite is Longueville Manor (from the days when I stayed on a business expense account!!!) - very luxurious but no sea view - although the gardens make up for it. The pool is outside but very lovely. You might need a car here as I don't know what the bus routes are like from here.

For luxury with character there is Chateau La Chaire but it doesn't have a pool and is off the beaten track so a car would be a must.

Went a couple of years ago, stopped at the De France, four star, swimming pool, spa, nice grounds, good food. Definitely didn’t need car or taxis, bus service is excellent, especially if you buy the longer use tickets. The De France is inSt Helier but a little way out, easy walk to the centre and the beach, couldn’t believe how few people were on the beaches given it was august and hot. Spent several nights sitting above the marina watching the world go by, bliss

We stayed at The Merton a few years ago. It was a solid, decent hotel with a lovely pool and slides. Lots of sunbeds and stuff going on for kids. It's a pleasant 10 minute walk into the town centre and there's a lovely park nearby too.

We have always had lovely weather when we've been to Jersey in July and August. We caught the bus and went all over.

Gardenquestion22 · 29/03/2026 20:02

We used the bus service, which is great, and hired a car just for a day to get to places where it was just easier with a car. It was only £40 or so.

@newname284056
P.S. we booked via BAholidays, they were much cheaper than other operators or DIY, & included full baggage allowance.

Is it far from a child friendly beach?

BG2015 · 30/03/2026 17:32

It's not far. If you search on Google Earth you can see the distances.

Lennonjingles · 30/03/2026 17:37

We’ve also stayed at The Merton, couldn’t fault it, although 2 year old DS screamed when left in the kids club for toddlers, so he stayed with us, older DS went to the kids club every night.

caringcarer · 30/03/2026 18:05

My sister lives in Jersey. St. Brelades is one of the best child friendly beaches. L'Horizon overlooks St Brelades bay.

TeenToTwenties · 30/03/2026 18:17

St Brelades beach is lovely, but big. Good variety of nearby cafes etc.

We had a car so more mobile, but we preferred Ouaisne (just along from St Brelades, can walk on the beach at lower tide, and Greve de Lecq on the north of the island. Both smaller, so easier to keep an eye on the children. But only 1 cafe really per location these days irrc.
