Swimming pool in Devon

TwoFirTreesToday · 18/06/2008 15:39

We are off on holiday on Friday and taking MIL (eeeek). Granny is super dooper keen to take the grandchildren to the local swimming pool in Kingsbridge. Great idea, but we wondered if its the best in the area or if there are some with slides and stuff. Can anyone recommend a really fun pool?

Pardon my geographical ignorance but is Kingsbridge near Croyde Bay ?

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 18/06/2008 19:34

Plymouth has the Pavillions with slides and stuff, but the changing rooms were a bit grim and there are plans to flatten it.

Further afield Tavistock has a little pool with a slide that goes outside (uncovered) then back into the indoor pool.

Never been to the Kingsbridge pools.

There's also the Lido at Plymouth for something a bit different (and a trip up the lighthouse afterwards perhaps?)

My geographical knowledge is also a bit pants, I will have to look up Croyde Bay!

Thank you all for the info, running out of time and once we are on holiday there will be no internet... argggggg

RosaLuxembunting · 19/06/2008 10:42

Croyde Bay is a looong way from Kingsbridge - other side of Devon!

Dragonbutter · 19/06/2008 10:51

The pool in kingsbridge is a really great pool. There is a seperate pool for the kids that is quite shallow so good for confidence building etc. I like it.
Also the main pool is fab for proper swimming (the kind where you actually get your hair wet) and i love it.

You could give them a call and find out if they do a float session.

Otherwise the pavillions in plymouth does slides etc.

Or why not try the beach? from salcombe (nr kingsbridge) you can take a ferry to north sands and go to the beach on the other side. That's lovely.

TwoFir · 19/06/2008 11:02

Yes, lots of visits to the beach planned, but Granny really wants to take them to a pool as well. Thanks for the number!

I am a bit of a Poirot fan and am really looking forward to going to Burgh Island!

Dragonbutter · 19/06/2008 11:06

Burgh island is nice. I keep meaning to go into the hotel though and never seem to get round to it. The Venus Cafe at bigbury does good burgers and chips.

How old are your kids?

Tutter · 19/06/2008 11:06

don't go to burgh island

miserable feckers they are

Dragonbutter · 19/06/2008 11:11

really? the hotel people?

Tutter · 19/06/2008 11:12

oops sorry, didn't realise you'd already planned a trip

have to go tend to ds2 now but will be back to explain my comment, i rpomise

Dragonbutter · 19/06/2008 11:14

the reason i keep meaning to go into the hotel is that i've heard they have a mosaic there. i'm a mosaic geek and want to see it.
am intrigued.

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 19/06/2008 11:34

Your not allowed to breathe on Burgh Island DS1 always manages to piss them off.

TwoFir · 19/06/2008 12:32

oooo

Agatha Christie and a Mosaic and very very strict, actually sounds good

TwoFir · 19/06/2008 12:32

have you seen how much it is to stay there? tis not cheap...

TwoFir · 19/06/2008 12:33

4 and 1 years
just the right ages to get into trouble in fact

this time i really will go and pack!

Dragonbutter · 19/06/2008 12:57

I'm fairly sure at 4 and 1 that the kingsbridge pool will be fine.

Tutter · 19/06/2008 16:32

we went to the beach there to take a ride over to the island on the sea tractor - ds1 had seen it online and was very excited

up pulls a burgh island landrover and the driver very sulkily advises all the pople waiting that there is no public service today - can't guarantee when it'll eb coming back

lifeguards using it to cross over to their perches tell us they'll help us back over with the buggy at low tide

so we make the journey and wander onto the island

hotel sign advises no facilities available to non-residents, but place is so quiet and it was early (10am-ish) so i decide to pop in and ask if, given it was quiet, it would be possible to buy morning coffees

cue very arsey face from receptionist and reply of "we are very busy"

i enjoyed announcing to ds1 (quiet loudly) as we left that they couldn't serve us as they were "very busy"

they really should advise people that the sea tractor isn't a public service

they were happy enough to take our £5+, mind...

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 19/06/2008 17:57

I think they were taken over a few years ago- I may have that wrong but I'm sure I read that somewhere, and all the 'no entry here, do not sit at this table, do not go into this bar, do not go near the hotel' type signs date from around then

TwoFir · 20/06/2008 07:39

Might just gaze wistfully from across the water

MilaMae · 20/06/2008 23:05

It's one of our fav beaches. Blackpool sands is lovely too,got an even better Venus cafe. We're fairly local had great plans for Burgh Island for my 40th errr £300 a night think not, could go to Paris for that!!!!!!!!

There used to be a lovely man that did the tractor for years 30p a crossing, sad to hear it's sooo different. Take a throw away bbq,my lot love that,it's good when the tide goes out as a lagoon(huge puddle)appears, keeps mine quiet for hours!!!!!!

Teignmouth is great too, lovely playpark on the front.
