Would you pay £350 to upgrade to Premium Economy

It’s a day flight and around 11hrs. I will be celebrating my 30th birthday in that week.

It’s £350 each, two of us

I’ve upgraded to PE a couple of times and vowed never again.
No seats together so two of us were scattered around the cabin.
Only seats left were in the middle of a row of three at back of cabin so came to us last with food order so we were stuck with a quinoa salad
Upgrade offers meant cabin was full and loads of parents had chosen it as it was an overnight flight. Absolute bedlam whereas economy was an oasis of calm.
BA, Virgin, Emirates, Qantas

I would and have, though only on Virgin where IME it's worth it (don't bother with BA unless you really enjoy broken seats)

It can also be worth asking a travel agent to quote prices for you though. The price of any seat is far from fixed and they can sometimes book at better rates - last time I did this the upgrade only cost me £200 instead of twice that

For daytime flights I usually to economy but get a leg room seat. For night flights, premium is worth it.

CrotchetyQuaver · 18/03/2026 19:33

Check what you get for your money in PE from that airline.
i flew PE last year to Sydney with Singapore airlines, I think the main difference was extra legroom/bigger seats. The food wasn't any different to what you'd expect to get in economy. I was lucky enough to be upgraded to business class on the way home, now that was fabulous with real, easily identifiable food!

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 18/03/2026 19:34

I’ve done this and it was 100% worth it xx

brightbevs · 18/03/2026 19:37

Absolutely worth it! We did it for a flight to the Caribbean and honestly I don’t think I’d do a flight that length in normal economy again. The cabin was half empty so our baby got their own seat.

On BA it’s well worth it. Slightly less worth it if you can’t get a pair on the window slides. The food and service is much better than the large economy cabins and the seat more comfortable. Especially on a day flight it’s perfectly adequate. Then again sometimes you can upgrade to business for 450 or thereabouts and that’s an even better deal.

I do the opposite, I fly business going there as I like to eat all the food, go in the lounge and watch TV with my feet up. Then I fly home economy with extra leg room as I don’t ever eat or drink anything except water and I’m ‘over’ the whole holiday thing by then.

I wouldn’t no & would spend the £700 on experiences & having a good time in the destination instead. I’m a cheap skate though & im sure my husband would have different opinions on this!

I only go Business if I get a free upgrade - it makes a massive difference for a night flight in particular. I’ve been very lucky recently - got upgraded on two 13 -14 hour flights.

I flew BA PE yesterday back from Singapore and it was definitely worth it. Sat in the window so no disturbance. 1st time I’ve actually managed to get some good sleep on an overnight flight (last year travelled back from China in economy and was completely knackered with no sleep). Travelled out few weeks ago in Club suite business which was very nice but PE is a good compromise and even got served proper champagne as they ran out of prosecco.

I’ve done it once, from London to New York. It was much cheaper than what it is now and all in all I didn’t think it was worth it just to have a little extra leg room, better food and priority boarding. Even for 11 hours, as long as it’s a day flight, no. Business class, however, from what I’ve read is a whole other level and if course crazy expensive. In general I prefer to to use my money for experiences at my destination. As long as I get my preferred seats then that’s what’s important to me now.

Which airline are you flying with?

I travelled PE with Air China and that was best Premium experience.
