Trying to cram everything into a backpackers backpack!
What is essential and what can I leave out?

@PlatinumBrunette I’m not a Bruce Parry sort of person and I doubt most of us are. We had dc with us and a decent lodge mattered. I’m not really about tribal experiences!

@DuchessofKirkcaldy79 we went to Ecuadorean Amazon and they provided wellies for the walks through the jungle. Reiterate light long sleeved tops and full length trousers. Have a great time

Long lightweight trousers and shirt (recommend Rohan - many of their clothes are also very effective sunblock and an anti-mosquito), a wide-brimmed hat, walking boots, factor 50 suntan lotion, mosquito repellent (recommend this Mosi-guard: https://www.mosi-guard.com/insect-repellent/mosi-guard-extra-spray), malaria prophylactics, a mosquito net for sleeping.

Mosi-guard® Lemon Eucalyptus Extra Spray — Mosi-guard

The longest-lasting protection we have…the Mosi-guard Lemon Eucalyptus Extra Spray is easy to use and FREE from DEET.

I think you misunderstood my random memory comment as a criticism.

However, you have made me realise the extent that wildlife is being removed from their environment in the name of tourism. Such a shame.

OhDear111 · 27/03/2026 17:02

@PlatinumBrunette Oh get off your high horse! The odd snake and poisonous spider is removed! Hardly comparable with destruction of the rainforest. It’s important tourists DO visit to maintain these areas as far as possible because often governments don’t care. Removing the odd snake is neither here nor there.

@somanychristmaslightsWhy do you think you would be coming into contact with snakes? We never have.

We did! Sounds like you had a sanitised experience (luxury lodge perhaps?). OP’s son likely to be on a budget option lodge or one for more intrepid travellers. We saw Boa’s and a huge snake hanging off a tree (can’t remember what that was).

OhDear111 · 27/03/2026 19:00

@PinterandPirandello Absolutely a very good lodge but not luxury! I’m like the majority though. I’ve no intention of roughing it and virtue signalling.

JacknDiane · 27/03/2026 20:03

Yes definitely this is a budget experience.

Odd question this one...hes going for around a month, what size of backpack would you recommend? Would 45litres be big enough?

I forgot to ask...why would deet spray work, everyone here seems to be recommending spray with as much deet as possible in it?
surely deet free isn't much use?

You guys are mad! You know you can just watch a documentary or 2 on your wide screen TVs from the comfort and safety of your living rooms, don't you?

DEET spray has been around for decades.it works. Tbe one I recommended has also been around for decades and also works I have uasd it over the world, including South America. I came across many years ago i
while reading a leaflet about avoiding malerua - it as by WHO or some other respected organisation.

Why is it mad? The Amazon is the most incredible place I've ever been to, I can't wait to go again.
