Jet2, protection if things go south before travel

We're looking at booking a Jet2 package to Tenerife in August for 6 of us (2 adults, 2 kids aged 1 and 5 plus grandma and uncle). Deposit is small but the balance will be several thousand. We need to book soon as availability for a group our size is already limited and prices are climbing.

My mum raised a concern about the current world situation and what happens if things escalate and we end up needing to cancel. I'm not worried about Tenerife being affected directly but I genuinely don't know the answer to this.

If we cancel, do we just lose the deposit or are we liable for the full balance? If Jet2 cancel (e.g. FCO advice changes) are we fully refunded? Is there any add-on insurance worth getting that would cover cancellation for reasons beyond standard cover?

I don't follow the news closely at the moment as I have a history of anxiety triggered by it and I'm working through this with CBT so I'm not totally up on the details of the current situation which is why I want to make sure we're properly covered before committing.

Has anyone navigated Jet2's cancellation terms or found good ‘cancel for any reason’ cover? Would you book now and trust the ATOL protection or wait?

Thank you

I’ve seen the general thread from yesterday about whether people are delaying summer bookings but I’m looking for more specific advice on the actual cancellation terms and cover options rather than the broader question of whether to book at all.
Thank you

Surely you need to ask jet2, in writing?

cestlavielife · 06/03/2026 09:27

Book comprehensive travel cover with all add ons for delays losses etc when you book the holiday . Or buy annual cover before/at same time as you book holiday .
Pay for peace of mind.

Thanks, yes I could contact Jet2 directly for the official terms but I was really hoping to hear from anyone who has actually been through a cancellation with them as the reality of how these things play out in practice isn’t always the same as what’s written down. And obviously Jet2 aren’t going to point me towards third party insurance options so that part of the question is very much aimed at people who’ve found something useful themselves.

If you cancel within a specified period of departure you are liable for additional costs, usually up to 100% from six weeks ahead. When is the balance due?

Yes I’m thinking this might be the right call and worth the money for peace of mind at present, thanks.

Tenerife isn't near the affected area. If you cancel you pay cancellation fees. If Jet2 cancels you are refunded in full though sometimes takes a bit if large volumes affected. Insurance won't cover a war. If FCDO advice changes Jet2 will cancel. I would not be concerned about Tenerife.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 06/03/2026 09:35

If jet 2 are ABTA registered then if fcdo advice changes for your destination yes you should be refunded.

Jet2 are a uk based airline so if you are stranded they are required to get you home and pay for accomodation etc until they do. Even if not their fault.

Book with a credit card for additional protection.

I think if holidays to the Canaries end up being affected, we will have bigger things to worry about than lost holiday costs, but it's worth noting that Jet2 were excellent and very flexible during the pandemic, allowing people to postpone or change destinations for booked holidays easily.

I believe it said the balance is due 10 weeks prior to travel (so around June some time), but j just saw what their cancellation fees or what you late liable for snd it’s a sliding scale depending on how close to the holiday it’s cancelled and it seems reasonable

Thank you, that was super helpful (I don’t know why I hadn’t looked at that page yet, must be sleep deprived and in desperate need of a holiday 😅)

I agree and am not particularly worried about Tenerife in August, but my mum consumes a lot of news and I wanted to reassure her and also sense check myself as I didn’t genuinely know the answer.

Jet2 were brilliant the times we’ve been away with them before, made holidaying with kids easy, but no experience with cancellations or changes. That’s great to know about how they handled the pandemic.

Just be careful re your deposit/s, whilst they may be very low - you may not get them back if you cancel.
if they are anything like Easyjet Holidays then whilst they allow the cancellation, the deposit is credited to your Easyjet account to be used for a future holiday.

So whilst it may only be something like £60 pp deposit for 6 - that's £360 that you will be out of pocket until you book the next holiday with that company thus £360 less towards the next holiday if it is with a different company.

However if people are not able to go on holiday to Tenerife in the summer then we have bigger problems to worry about.

Fair point re: deposit but we’ve travelled with Jet2 a few times now and they’ve made our holidays so easy I wouldn’t begrudge having to book with them again.

And I agree that if it got so bad Tenerife was affected then we’d have bigger issues, just wanted to sense check the whole thing before I pressed go 😅
