August week in Zell am See - boring for young kids?

We're considering the above, via public transport - a self-catering apartment, so no swimming pool or other activities. Kids are 6 and 8, city kids, and while they like nature they wouldn't hike for hours each day...getting a bit panicked will be hard to keep them entertained!? we won't have a joker card or similar (house swap), and there's no toys or anything at accommodation, am I going to spend a fortune going up mountain, finding stuff to do etc? Is there enough/nearby in Zell for a week, if we won't have a car? thoughts welcome, have seen some rave reviews but also a lot of people saying they were bored, and this would be our main foreign hols this year so want to get it right!

I’ve not been to Zell in the summer but our kids have loved mountain holidays (DS chose to go with mates aged 19!) since they were babies. There will be loads to do. Google or chat gbt will be more specific but chair lifts into the mountains, swimming and playing in lakes, go ape…. Loads of fun things!

There's plenty to do in and around Zell am See, even if you don't have the Sommerkarte (for Zell) or the Joker Card for Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Ask at the Tourist Office in Zell ( or look online - Schmitten.at) for any family ticket options, weekly tickets etc. which will always be cheaper than buying single tickets on the cable cars. Likewise, look at the ÖBB website for details of family and special "Freizeit" train and bus tickets. If you had been renting an apartment (rather than doing a house swap) you would have been able to get a Mobility Card for everyone from the accommodation provider which would have given you free use of all public transport throughout the Province of Salzburg during your stay.

Obviously there is the lake - there is a lido in the centre of Zell (just along the lake behind the Grand Hotel) and at Thumersbach. You can also swim in the lake just by jumping in - there are big grassy areas along the promenade between the railway and the lake (walk towards Thumersbach, clockwise from Zell) where the lake is accessible. There are cable cars and chair lifts to ride.

There is an Alpine Coaster at Kaprun (next to the Maiskogel lift) and a play area in the snow at the very top of the Kitsteinhorn glacier. The narrow gauge railway runs from Zell to Mittersill and beyond - on Thursdays there are two departures pulled by a veteran steam locomotive.

The 680 Postbus leaves every 30 minutes towards Saalbach, Hinterglemm and the final stop at Lengau. From the Lengau bus stop there is a 30 minute gentle walk to the Lindlingalm and Talschluss area (there is also a Noddy-train that does the same route, starting from the car park 200m from the bus stop) where there is Europe's biggest high-ropes park (like Go Ape) that also has a course for small kids to try. The adults can do the bigger courses and the zip wires if they're brave enough! At the Lindlingalm mountain restaurant there are goats and ponies to pet, pigs to look at and a water park to splash around in. If you're energetic enough, there is a nice one-hour walk around the head of the valley to the Ossmanalm mountain hut. In both Saalbach amd Hinterglemm there are several playgrounds, both on the mountains and in the villages themselves.

I forgot to mention the indoor play facilities at Kreativland in Maishofen, which is located next to the railway station at Maishofen. Something to have in mind for a rainy day. This is about a one-hour gentle walk from Zell alongside the lake and then past the castle at Prielau basically following the valley and the railway line, or you can take the train (one stop from Zell am See), or the 680 bus which also stops outside the station at Maishofen.

They also have festival nights every Wednesday in August. With music, food entertainment etc. We went Zell one summer when dd was 8 and she loved it. She got to drive the boat you could hire on the lake , swam in the lake etc, was towed on an inflatable behind a boat etc, did bike rides, played mini golf as well as some walking. Also did a day out to Salzburg.
We had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend a summer visit.

Not only does Zell have the festival nights, but there are also the spectacular Magic Lake light shows at various times during the week [Hint - get there early to get a good vantage point]:

The Zell Magic Lake Show is THE event in summer: Be inspired by water, light, music and laser show!
