Mummy of 17 month old boy needs urgent inoculation advice/travel tips?

Hubby has just booked us a holiday. The brief was nowhere too hot or too far, as DS has never flown before. He's booked a week in Mexico?! In fairness it looks lovely, but we go 4 weeks today, and I'm unsure whether need to get DS inoculated, and if so do we have time?
Also, any tips on how to occupy an extremely active toddler for 10 hours during a 10 hour day flight?!
Thank you in advance for any help/advice you can offer!

Lol, he's throwing you in at the deep end there! At least once you've done that you won't feel restricted in where you go next time!
I would personally, if you can, try and adjust your DS's sleep pattern before you go in line with the time difference, just do it gradually as jet lag can be horrid for toddlers.

Re. the jabs you are best asking your GP but I suspect Hep B and Tetanus will be neccesary.

Thanks Strictmachine. That's a really good tip. I've told hubby that seeing as he broke the rules he can run up & down the plane aisle apologising to everyone DS annoys!

I would recommend Hep A and possibly typhoid for Mexico (but typhoid isn't usually given to under 18 months).

Hep B not necessary, but you all need to be in date for tetanus and polio. Vaccines should ideally be given at least 3 weeks before travel so you should make a practice nurse appointment ASAP.

Also be prepared for the heat - it will probably be very hot. Remember gallons of water (bottled) and lots of sun cream and sun avoidance. Also insect repellent and food hygiene.

Have fun

Thanks all. Have just been on safetots.co.uk & ordered lots of SPF50 sun suits, a legion hat & some sea shoes for DS. Have also stocked up on total sun block & swim nappies for him. DH wanted to buy a sun tent too, but I think we're already travelling pretty heavy, and DS will most certainly not sit in a tent with a whole new country to explore (how do 17 month olds have such energy?!) Am going to see the nurse on Monday at 10.20 to see about jabs. Just need to get through the flight now!

ok practical flight help.

a change of clothes for ds or at least a spare t shirt. ( in case of milk/juice/sick down his front.)

spare tshirt for you...in case of the above!

small stock of attention grabbing suitable toys to bring out one at a time when desperate. Try to avoid things that will roll under the seat in front of you!

sure others will have lots of ideas.
