Alternative destination to Dubai for May, good weather, water park and things to do

As the title says, due to go to Dubai in May with two children under 5. Was going for the reliable hot weather and the hotel for all inclusive and access to pools, water parks and theme parks.

we can cancel this week and just loose the deposit which I think given the situation makes more sense but where can I look at as an alternative - maybe not the weather but for a good warm pool and some slides.

Dont fancy the canary islands or Spain. Want to avoid Turkey and Cyprus

I’d recommend Florida too. Fab holiday with young kids. I’m far from young and I went to Orlando a few months ago and had an amazing time (never too old for theme parks, IMO 😁).

We went to Portugal in May and it was freezing in the water. Too cold for beaches.
I would look for somewhere further south.

I have no other ideas as we are doing Turkey again this year (which is on your no list), after unexpectedly loving it when we went last year. We have never really done the 100% beach style holidays before, and didn't think it would be for us. But we went as a "let's try it once" type trip.

Edited

Agree, I went to Portugal end of April through to early may. I didnt expect the hot weather so wasn't disappointed, had other holidays booked later in the year for that. But if OP is wanting weather to the same level as dubai, then Portugal in May is not it. More jeans and tshirt weather. And so cold in the nights. I also had rain on a few days there.

Also had an amazing unexpected holiday in may to Turkey after previously dismissing it as somewhere not interested in. My UK break was cancelled and i therefore had time off booked with nowhere to go, so had a last minute ridiculously cheap deal to a 5* in Turkey so thought why not. Boiling the whole week, loved it. Probably wouldn't go right now though, not knowing where could be targeted next.

Crete should be hot this time of year OP, but not sure about any theme parks as they are not my thing so have no clue. Morocco will also be be hot. These were my last 2 holidays in seek of some out of season sun and did not disappoint.

We've been to Rhodes at the end of April beginning of May and it was lovely weather, apart from one day when it rained. It's definitely tshirt and shorts weather even if the locals were wearing winter clothes. I can remember the pool being particularly cold.

How about Lalandia in Billund?

The human rights issue is the reason which Is Im sure you are aware of but hey who cares about abused women and modern slavery we got a fab holiday. Don't pretend not to understand.

So why not say what you mean in the first place?

Yes this may be true. I just remember the beach being very beautiful, and the rest of it just being a fake nightmare. I hated the whole rest of it, it was all just so…dull. Except for the wadi waterpark, that was really cool. I have never been back due to the UAE attitude towards slavery, homosexuality, women etc, so maybe it has changed to be much better now in terms of interest and my view is outdated!

I think some people can't do bland, sterile and shiny, and some actively prefer it. Look at all the posts on here from people who had an awful time in places like Paris and Rome because they found them "dirty" 🙄.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 04/03/2026 11:32

I would have suggested Cyprus but can understand why you might prefer to avoid it. I’d look as far south in Europe as possible - I can’t recommend anywhere specific but Crete/Rhodes/Kos rather than northern Greece. My ILs usually go to Lesbos earlier in May, which tends to be warm but not too hot, but the weather hots up more towards the end of the month.

Neverland resort in hurghada, egypt (look for Pickalbatros jungle aqua).

Or lalandia in billund, Denmark if you don’t need the sun.

nana golden beach in Crete is also nice

Ozmumofboys3 · 04/03/2026 23:29

Thailand or Bali. In Nusa Dua, Bali some great hotels with all inclusive and kids slides etc. Great food, guaranteed weather, and a great water park.

Ooooh I looked at this. Is it good?

It's brilliant. Billund was one of our best breaks with the kids. Legoland and Lego House are great fun as well. So much to do and everything close together in the town. Food and drink is expensive though.

Frankie789 · 05/03/2026 14:58

@HiGunny unfortunately we can’t get there from the NW very easy.

currently have these down as options and can push out to June - will take my DC out of school (not legal age yet)

Disney Paris and a few days at a campsite
Italy for a twin center break
Lanzarote - found a potential good deal

I wish I had the funds for Orlando but to do it properly we just don’t have the cash this year and wouldn’t want to go and have to watch our money, though I’m super tempted to look for a last minute deal but who knows

Not helpful for OP, but it is very sad that it is becoming increasingly difficult to travel due to war.

Sadder for the people living through it I expect 🤨

minipie · 06/03/2026 14:19

Definitely Canaries if you just want good weather, easy flight, AI and water parks. And safe.

I would say anywhere in the Mediterranean will have much nicer weather in May than in July/August when the past few years have been much too hot. I've been to the South of France several times in late May and been able to swim in the sea (and I hate cold water).

I went south of France two years ago end of June and honestly was cold some days, 16 degrees other days around 24 so such a mix bag but really put me off and the water was cold for the kids even the indoor pools
