Advice on Canada trip

We are thinking of going to Canada in May/june…. Rough plan is to fly to Toronto, couple of days and visit Niagara, then fly to Calgary. From there hire a car and drive to Vancouver slowly with 2/3 stops, taking about a week. Then a few days in Vancouver/Victoria before flying back to London.

Does this seem a sensible plan? Any advice is welcome, x

We went to Toronto with a trip to Niagara. Both amazing. Didn't feel the need to add humongous road trips as well

I'd love to do this, did you book it all separately? We've been looking at Canadian Affair and others but they only do around 4/5 days.

We did a Newfoundland roadtrip 20 years ago that was memorable, would recommend. I'd love to visit PEI.

Calgary to Vancouver on the Trans Canada is close to 11 hours and that’s without stopping. And assuming there is no slow moving or heavy traffic.

You have to book far ahead at that time of year, even in October it was pretty difficult to get tickets for Lake Louise etc. You have to create an account with Parks Cànada and book a slot, which can sell out very quickly. Alternatively go very early or late evening

I disagree that you should skip the Calgary Vancouver drive as the scenery is (world-class) stunning.

Toronto, on the other hand, is a fairly dull, very large city. So I'd skip that if you need to drop part of your itinerary. Ottawa (the capital) is also boring. Calgary is a fantastic gateway to the Rockies but the city itself is not very exciting.

I agree with others that Montreal/Quebec City and the Maritimes are worth visiting. Rural Nova Scotia (including Cape Breton) very beautiful

Thanks…. We were in Montreal and Quebec last September and loved them.
Keen to see a different bit of Canada.. Would love to do Halifax one day, not this time though. DS has not been to Toronto or Niagra so thought it might be easier and cheaper to see him there. But if it’s that dull, perhaps not my best idea!

I’d include Revelstoke between Banff and Kelowna, there’s some great hot springs nearby. Also go to Deep Cove in outskirts of Vancouver beautiful bay where lots of filming is done.

I was underwhelmed by Niagra tbh.
I have just come back from 16 days in west BC.
We did a week touring Vancouver Island and could have spent a lot longer there, but had to get DD back to her uni in Vancouver, as she only had a week off. We did 3 nights in Victoria (whale warching, visit to Sooke Potholes, lovely shops), 1 night in Nanaimo (as a stop off only, we did activities (Malahat Skywalk and Duncan Totem Trail on the way there, its a quiet place) and 3 nights on Cox Bay near Tofino. Which was incredible. Surfing, rain forest, endless trails. The drive through the mountains was fabulous (altho it snowed on the way back and was more hairy!).
We bookended the Island trip with nights at UBC, there is so much to do there as well! But most prob wouldnt bother. They have an excellent Anthropolgy musem and Japanese Garden, as well as Botanical Garden, Biodiversity Museum and their own forest Pacific Spirit park. Its worth a drive out from Vancouver
Then we had 5 nights on the North Shore of Vancouver. It was a great place to stay. Close to all the wilderness on North Shore (as well as major tourist attractions of Capilano Suspension bridge and Grouse mountain). Deep Cove was truly stunning.
Very easy public transport into Vancouver. Try the Sea Bus and Aqua bus. We liked Granville Island and Queen Elizabeth Park. Gastown was run down but still worth a visit for the history and downtown and Yale town were good for a wander and shops/ eating.
Just a heads up that the World Cup is in Vancouver this summer between 13th June to 7th July so I would avoid like the plague, likely to be more rammed.
