I have a 2 night stay this week which I’m looking forward to, celebrating my birthday solo.

I arrive in the morning and will do a Guru walking tour mid afternoon. The following day is my birthday.

Considering taking in a Fado show while there but other than that I’m quite open to ideas.

What did you really enjoy while there?

Eating ! Some lovely places, but we were there too long ago to make recommendations.
We used the trams to get about, it's very steep so take good shoes.
We also used the funicular, but wouldn't now.
www.visitportugal.com is a useful site.

Time Out Market, the castle, the various Miradors, tuk tuk tour, lovely food, some nice roof top bars. 28 Tram. I'm going tomorrow, but for work :(

Restaurants. Stopping regularly for great, cheap coffee. Day trip to Cascais.

Walking by the sea front and sitting having a few drinks people watching. Might not be able to do it as this time of year. The food was also fab and I found the people so friendly.

Maggiethecat · 22/02/2026 14:41

All sounds fab! Think it will
be the taster for future trips 😊

The E15 tram to Belem and wandering along the lovely prom area, sights including the Torre de Belem and the Discoveries Monument. The monastery is popular but I only viewed from the outside and close by you can sample a famous Pastel de Nata (custard tart), or three!

It's also worth the queue for the old style Tram 28 too, the journey up through narrow and steep streets is fascinating, both for the local districts you see and the scared looks of tourists at certain points pressing themselves into the wall as the tram trundles past just inches away.

My short visit to Lisbon was solo too and I always felt safe, just be aware of pickpockets and enure your belongings are secure especially on busy trams.

Enjoy your birthday!

Bryonyberries · 22/02/2026 16:38

Be careful of pickpockets especially on trams. My friend lost her wallet on one and we had a nice tour of the police station!

The castle was nice and had lovely views over the city.

Notmymarmosets · 22/02/2026 16:47

Cais das colunas , looking out over the water listening to the street musicians is my happy place.

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 22/02/2026 16:53

We did a tuk tuk tour which was amazing. We saw all the old town which we’d never have seen on our own. Cane across a Faldo singer one night when looking for a restaurant out of the tourist area.
walk along the front to see the ships.

Go up the elevator to see right across town. It’s earlier to walk up if there’s a queue.
Train to Sintra for lunch. The Pastel de natas

IceBrownie · 22/02/2026 16:55

My home town of Cascais is beautiful (biased)

seratoninmoonbeams · 22/02/2026 17:20

By the Wine 🍷…. if you like a nice vino and nice cold meat or steak, antipasti etc. They have seating at the bar or book now for a table 👌🏽get a Bifano from O Trevo.

Oh. And I would wholeheartedly recommend a tuktuk tour. So so good. We did a two hour one in the pissing down rain and it was superb. Have a great time 🙌🏻

Maggiethecat · 22/02/2026 17:41

Lovely suggestions, thank you all!

Ive booked a walking tour but wondering now if I should do a tuk tuk one? Perhaps easier on the feet 🤔

I concur with lots of the above, and also the Tile Museum.

ElizabethVonArnim · 22/02/2026 18:14

We took a boat to Belem for the custard tarts and that was lovely - similar to getting a tram, time wise, but a bit different. Also loved sunset up at the castle. Take a bottle of wine with you.

MrsKeats · 22/02/2026 18:44

The Time Out market, lots of lovely cafes, everywhere was very reasonable and it’s nice it’s on the sea.

Hilllbillbilly · 22/02/2026 18:45

The amazing seafront and architecture.

Decorhate · 22/02/2026 20:38

One of my favourite places was Miradoura da Graça. A great spot to have a drink and watch the sunset with amazing views over the city. We walked up but there is a funicular.

Fearlesssloth · 22/02/2026 20:40

£1.50 v. strong cocktails at every second bar!

Dumbledore167 · 22/02/2026 20:55

I thought the nightlife was bloody brilliant.
We went to Alface Hall for live music every night and LOVED it.
Had the best steak of my life in Lisbon too - Atalho Real the place was called.
Have fun x

I’ve had 2 totally disastrous trips to Lisbon (things unrelated to actual Lisbon but I think I risk death myself if I tempt the gods and go to Lisbon again 😂)

On the latest trip one of the 3 disasters on that particular trip was that my partner got food poisoning from the time out market and was in bed for half the trip. So don’t go to the time out market.
