Buffet but adventure?

Trying to keep everyone happy….feels impossible. We have 7-10 days at the start of July.
DD’s only criteria is an evening buffet, which I think ties us to resort type hotels?
DH and DS like exploring, history, visiting new places, playing sports.
I just like being by the sea, or a lake.
We’ve done Rhodes, Amalfi Coast,Lake Garda, Crete. Been to Spain/Majorca lots.
Love France but it doesn’t seem a buffet-type destination?
Is there anywhere that could fit the bill, ideally not roasting/mosquito-y that time of year?

You could try Croatia eg Dubrovnik - lots of coastal hotels will do a buffet, and you’ve got the history and water sports if you fancy it.

How old are the kids?

They’ll be 16 and 18 - possibly last family holiday but they seem keen for this year

Thanks this is a good suggestion. We’ve been briefly to Dubrovnik

Would you consider a cruise? It would mean you get to explore a lot of new places (many of which have a history slant)

sashh · 22/02/2026 11:06

I was going to suggest a cruise too.

Yes it’s possibility in my mind…not sure about budget but I’ll look into it - thanks.

Have you been to Lanzarote?

Lots of watersports, volcano park, Cesar Manrique artist houses, caves etc
Hiking, cycling, traditional inland villages

Plus obviously loads of hotels with buffet dinner.

The inland of Gran Canaria is spectacular volcanic mountains, plus also watersports etc

Have you been to the Roman ruins in Empuries on the Costa Brava

Madeira?

Tbh, I'd not let the holiday centre on something as restrictive as a buffet dinner which is generally something people tolerate rather than actively choose and perhaps stay B&B in a hotel so she gets the buffet experience at breakfast, you can stock up on drinks and snacks from the supermarket and eat out in the evening and perhaps see if there's a buffet restaurant for one night where you're staying. Or you can often pay to eat at a hotel buffet as a non resident.

It does sound like a cruise might suit you all well - some ships will have lots of sports - perhaps a basketball/sports court, ropes course, climbing wall, golf simulator etc. There'll definitely be a buffet in the evening (and breakfast, and lunch) but there will also be table service restaurants for those that want them instead. You''ll visit lots of new places, and you'll definitely be by the sea! If DH and DS like history, an eastern med/Greek cruise might be particularly good, or the coast of Italy.

The Neilson Resort in Croatia is half board, had tons and tons of sports including watersports, and is next to a national park for hiking and also rock climbing. And you can go to other places from their.
Went last year, would highly recommend. My kids are younger but looked amazing for teens too.

I was going to say the Manor Farm site at Interlaken ( think Eurocamp type accommodation ) but you might want an additional location for a 7-10 day trip.

Theres many places to visit in the area but you’d need a car, either hired to your own.

If you’re happy to cycle, Ile de Re? Stay at the Odalys site at Rivedoux Plage.

That looks amazing! But sold out in July sadly. Thank you for the suggestion

What about somewhere in the Alps? There are hotels that offer versions of all inclusive, some with evening buffets. Close to activities/cable cars/mountain walks/mountain biking. As an example, Saalbach Hinterglemm area has the Adler (definitely evening buffet) and Die Sonne hotels (others too I'm sure). Others offer set menus included in price.
