Black Forest/Bavaria help

Hello. We’re likely to spend about a week in Germany in August and would love some suggestions. We plan to spend two nights in Fussen. But would love suggestions for the other five days. Kids are 4 and 7.

Currently considering two nights in Freiburg and three nights around Titisee (which I realise are very close!). But very open to changing. Like the look of the Badeparadies Schwarzwald. Love a mountain coaster. Considering a day at Europa park. Will have a car. Please give me your best tips!

It’s probably a 4 hour drive between Füssen and Freiburg. I’d spend less time in the Black Forest and more time near Füssen or stop off on Lake Constance on the way over. Titisee is nice, great if you want to browse for cuckoo clocks and go on a boat trip but that’s about it. There area around Füssen is more spectacular, loads of lakes there too but with a better backdrop. (Plenty of boat trips on Lake Constance too.) There’s an alpine coaster in Nesselwang near Füssen.
Badeparadise in Schwarzwald is good but it will be heaving if you go on a rainy day. I think children are also only allowed in the Galaxy oasis area except on special family days. There’s lots of open air pools (Freibads) on Lake Constance where you also have access to lake swimming and play areas as well as swimming pools.

Thank you @Needsomepeaceandquiet We also wondered about Lake Constance, but ChatGBT suggested around Titisee was better for young children. But I was keen to get real people views. Is there anything you’d recommend doing or staying around there?

We are going to Austria to Tyrol for four days after Füssen and then have another four or five days to spend in Austria (not planned yet). But keen to get some varying ideas for the five days in south Germany, before we arrive in Fussen. We could stay longer than two nights in Fussen - it looks beautiful - but most recommendations seem to suggest two nights is fine there?

We aren’t concerned about the 4 hour drive between Freiburg and Fussen - kids are great in a car and we do a lot of road trips down through Europe. We are still deciding whether to drive down from the UK or to fly into Stuttard or Munich (flying seems more likely now)

The treetop walk is beautiful and slide down is great fun.

We did two days at Europa Park and one day at Rulantica. We loved both, but Rulantica does get very busy.

Bad Wildbad: Treetop Walk Black Forest

Bad Wildbad's 1250m treetop walk offers a spectacular 360° view of the Black Forest from an unusual perspective all year round.

There’s lots of great suggestions on this website. I would recommend taking the cable car up the Pfänder mountain for great views of the lake, there’s also a small animal park at the top. At Affenberg there are loads of storks that nest on the roof around the cafe. There’s a nice little theme park aimed at under 10s near Ravensburg. Mainau Island is also supposed to be great. Nice towns to visit include Meersburg and Lindau.
Two days in Füssen should be fine. There’s also a nice forest park for kids near the lech falls. www.bodensee.eu/en/what-to-do/lake-constance-highlights/families

Passau is lovely.

Germanyhols · 22/02/2026 13:31

@Jijithecat that treetop well looks great, thank you! Also wasn’t aware of Rulantica so will take a look. Did you go to Badeparadise in Schwarzwald by any chance? Just wondering if one might be better than the other?

@Needsomepeaceandquiet thanks. That’s really helpful. Seems like there’s quite a lot to do in both areas!

@MimiGC it does look lovely, but is too far west I think as we will go from Fussen to Austria

We stayed in Freiburg but ended up in Titisee, Triburg and Europa Park on the days we were there - find a decent accommodation and drive around the area - Konstanz is very nice - we stayed at the Harbr hotel which was decent. One to two nights in Fussen is sufficient - if the kids don’t like walking you are probably better to take the bus to the bridge. Enjoy it’s a great holiday!

Jijithecat · 22/02/2026 19:55

Sorry, I don't know. We went to Rulantica because our holiday was based around us going to Europa Park, so we weren't looking at other water parks.
If you like a cable car this one has beautiful views and a nice cafe at the top.

I love Freiburg, been a few times and while I do enjoy the train ride up to Titsee I find it a bit touristy up there.

Germanyhols · 28/02/2026 21:35

Thank you all! Lots of nice places to think about now!

There is a big outdoor marble run in Birkendorf. Have both euro and 2 euro coins on you as I can remember which they are at the start to buy the wood marble. There’s an outdoor pool here too. We also did a barefoot sensory trail in the Black Forest also

We do this trip every couple of years with our DC.

Rulantica is by far the highlight! It’s wonderful. Also each town/village has a wonderful Freibad (Dreisam Bad for example, but the city Strandbad is also fun).

The kids love a trip to the basement in any of the bigger Müllers, perfect for a rainy day! The toys are incredible.

We usually head to the Tirol then. Kids are young and love the museums in Innsbruck (all work for all ages), wondering around, ice cream, cable cars up to the mountains.
