We are a family of 6
we found a cheap airbnb last year but the reason it was cheap was because there were no amenities nearby which mean that we had to cook every single meal
harder when you don’t have a larder to start from.
any advice on how to keep costs down

Camping! There’s an initial outlay for the kit but then you can go anywhere in the country for a fraction of the cost of a holiday home. Depends on how old your dc are - when ours were little they absolutely loved it, but as teens we had to ditch it, certainly as our main holiday.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard work, but we’ve a lot of good stories to tell from our camping adventures!

Going slightly off season places and not being dead set on a destination has worked for us in the past. If wanting to go abroad use skyscanner with your nearest airport, selected dates and put everywhere as the destination to find cheap flights. Then research accommodation on somewhere like booking.com. If you do have any times when you are slightly different school holidays than other areas that can work well too. For example we get two weeks in October which has meant we’ve been able to get some good deals. We pretty much avoid summer holiday destinations in the summer and instead have used that time for city breaks using the skyscanner tip mentioned above.

Also never compare the school holiday price with the term time price - the differences are sickening (and make me realise how many holidays I can have when I retire from teaching!)

We’re a family of 6 and use Eurocamp/Roan or all camps/Sandaya or Yelloh for holidays. I work in a school too so no chance of nicking the kids out. We tend to go the last two weeks of August as it’s cheaper due to European kids holidays ending. We also go in Easter & either May half term or October half term to. We book early as it’s cheaper, & whilst there alternate cooking/bbq simple with eating out.
its also good as accommodation isn’t in adjoining room.

Choose destinations where the local schools aren't on holiday. Likely excludes Aug for most places but we've had great deals on Oct. We're in Scotland so first week in July is always cheapest.
Likewise if you want to visit Scotland our schools are back the first/second week on August.
