A solo trip to Senegal, Kenya or Sri Lanka?

I have decided to book a solo trip to one of these places in April as I haven’t been to any of them.
I’m also open to any other suggestions.
For my solo trips I enjoy booking a few excursions to places I’ve never been before and spending the days in between reading.
I will go for a week.
Has anyone been to all or some of these places and if so would you recommend them?

Based on absolutely nothing I’d say Sri Lanka is probably the safest as a solo traveler.

id love to go

Assuming you're in the UK, is there not somewhere closer you can go since you only have a week?

I can’t think of anywhere, I don’t mind long haul for a week as have done it lots of times.

I went to Sri Lanka in 2023 and agree it felt very safe, little public transport so you can hire a driver cheaply, beautiful scenery, quite slow and relaxed pace.

Africa is great. Generally and because there's no jet lag for a short trip.

I haven't been recently but Kenya did seem a bit more sexist and hassle for women. Compared to Tanzania, for exmple.

I’m biased as I’ve not been to Senegal or Kenya but I loved Sri Lanka - amazing wildlife; stunning and varied cultural sights; amazing friendly people, and I thought a very safe country: I think it would work as a solo woman trip if you made sensible choices.

Id go back again like a shot!

I've been to Kenya and Sri Lanka. Got hassled both places.

Oh and Yy to pp about drivers being cheap. The train journey from Kandy to Ella is AMAZING too!

@ForAmusedHazelQuoter
I've been to all 3!
If you're travelling alone I'd say Sri Lanka - felt very safe. Also my favourite of the three.
You can't go wrong with any though. All fantastic places to explore. Would Kenya need more time though? It's appeal is in nature really and a safari would take a good chunk of time.
Come back and update your post when you return!

I haven’t been to Kenya or Sri Lanka but unless you are looking for a west African husband I’d avoid Senegal. There is huge amounts of poverty, you will be hassled everywhere. Only stay in hotels that have armed guards-it wasn’t for me.

Sri Lanka is fine for solo women, you do get a bit of “where’s your husband” when I went out alone (he was about just working) but feels very safe. You can book a driver or there’s public transport and taxis/tut tuts (uber is your friend here, do get an e sim for your phone). English is widely spoken though not by as many older people.

I’ll probably stick with my current husband😆

Oh and I used a company called le passage to India for India but they cover Sri Lanka as well, they can book everything for you if you need it including a driver, trains, hotels etc, we elected to do b&b and went to local restaurants though

If you’ve not yet booked, I’d avoid Kenya in April as it’s rainy season. The rains have been bad this year. Otherwise Kenya is beautiful although there is hassle especially on the beaches (people tend to leave you alone when you say no thank you to the trip, bracelet, carving). Nairobi is a great city with lots of culture and great food. The beaches and safari are fantastic.

I really didn’t like Sri Lanka but I realise we may be in the minority. I can’t quite put my finger on why but it just wasn’t great. the final straw was our last night. We spent our last night in Negumbo in a hotel filled with Sri Lankan men on a corporate team building event - they were drunk, banging on our door at 3am, terrifying our children (and ourselves) - the staff didn’t speak English and wouldn’t deal with the rowdy behaviour. This probably ensured we left feeling like we didn’t love the country! The beach was really dirty and it was not possible to swim in the sea due to waves and currents (and debris).

Senegal was nice - interesting pink lake and slave island to visit as day trips from Dakar. Lots of great culture in the city. I also spent time at a sweet beach resort a few hours from Dakar. But I was visiting a friend who lived there so I didn’t have to plan anything. You would need French or a good translation app.
