2-4 night break….?

Jollymonkey · 18/02/2026 17:16

I feel like I need a break. Would be happy to spend £500 (maybe more). Somewhere I can get to within maybe 3hours of Glasgow (by public transport, happy to fly/train/bus/taxi). Probably with some nature? Would go on my own and want to mainly be on my own but not feel weird about it. Would love a Nordic cruise or something like that but maybe something a little more low key to start me off. Would like it to feel like an adventure. Any ideas??

You wouldn't see much nature on a cruise, and by the time you got to Norway it's time to come back!
What time of year?
Is weather important?

Weather is not important. Time of year not very important - I was thinking soon but could bank good ideas for later in the year too :) yes the cruise I know what you mean. Perhaps didn’t explain myself well. I like the idea of the scenery, the fresh air, +- whales…..

For summer Iceland. Went with DS 19 two years ago and the blue hair on the Golden Circle coach trip was young adults travelling alone. Feels very different and everyone is friendly. Reykjavík is all walkable. Look up Icelandair flights and we found adding on hotel and a trip was much cheaper than booking separately.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 18/02/2026 19:59

Switzerland?

Switzerland?

I’ve never been that excited about Switzerland which is perhaps a bit unfair! I’ll give it a look. Thanks :)

Yes I think maybe a very short tour. I don’t really like eating alone but also don’t really want company all the time. A short tour could work for that. Thanks

What about Helsinki? You can walk along the frozen river, could take a trip out to one of the islands on an ice breaking ship (so cool), there are lots of coffee shops and you might get to see the Aurora. There's even an outdoor winter pool! Such a great city in the winter.

nietzscheanvibe · 18/02/2026 20:22

Lake District?

It’s beautiful , lovely lakes, mountains, cable cars and wonderful train rides.

I think your £500 budgett is challenging - and impossible for Switzerland, which is very expensive.

TeamGeriatric · 18/02/2026 20:34

I don't think either Iceland or Switzerland will suit a £500 budget. Not been to Iceland but Switzerland was super expensive. Have a look at Skyscanner and see where you can fly to from your local airport, accomodation generally cheapest if you look at Eastern Europe so maybe Poland or Hungary or Latvia. That said it's low season in Western Europe so you might snag a bargain somewhere more main stream. I think you can find a 3 night trip somewhere with that budget, may go slightly over with meals and sightseeing expenses, but there or there abouts.

mayflowers9 · 18/02/2026 20:38

Another vote for the Lake District!

That’s sounds perfect - love the idea of an ice breaking ship!

the budget could be v flexible. Hadn’t really thought it through but could absolutely spend more if needed. Maybe £1k?

Yes Poland or Latvia could be good as have not been there. Any suggestions of places to stay there that would be good for a solo traveller? I mean I know that anywhere is ok for a solo traveler really - but I don’t travel much on my own these days - Ideally would like somewhere with street food/self catering so I don’t have to sit in a restaurant alone as I know I hate that despite my best efforts to lean into they feeling :)

My DS just returned from a solo trip to Switzerland, he flew EasyJet to Zurich and got the train to Lucurne. He did lots of activities and the trip cost £625 in total for four nights. He travelled with just an under-seat bag to cut costs.
I did a similar trip two years ago to Lausanne and flew into Geneva. Hotels in Switzerland offer a free pass so travel in the local area is free, Lausanne has a metro and really good buses so the free pass was really handy.
I went for three nights and spent £600 in total but I did more expensive activities than my DS. I took the to ferry over to Evian for dinner, an excursion to a cheese and a chocolate factory with a train ride and a boat trip looking at beautiful scenery.
Lausanne was lovely to walk around especially by the lake and I walked to the Olympic museum. On the first day I went on a tour with a local couple which was free, they refused a tip but welcomed a smoothie in a lovely vegan cafe.
I didn’t find prices higher than South East England which is where I live.

Check out EasyJet holidays, there are literally hundreds of short breaks from Scotland for £300 or less. Places like Prague and you book a hiking excursion in the countryside on the middle day and eat street food and visit little bistro places. Or Krakow, Belfast, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, The Hague, Austria and so on.

Bjorkdidit · 19/02/2026 05:28

In no particular order, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are probably some of the most expensive countries in Europe to visit, so always something to be mindful of.

When you say £500-1000 what does this need to cover? Just flights and hotel, or all spending money?

I would look at a small apartment, so you can buy some food/drinks from supermarkets to reduce the cost. When I'm alone, I prefer eating out at lunchtime, I like to eat more then anyway, rather than in the evening. Then you could just have easy food in the evening in the apartment.

Poland is very affordable and one of my new favourite places to visit. Cities such as Gdansk and Wroklaw are beautiful (not been to Krakow) and often have cheap flights from the UK. Eating out and accommodation are good value, good public transport. You could fly to Gdansk and spend some time in the city and also at the nearby coast, which is very wellness and nature focussed. I went to Gdansk but also picked up a leaflet about Sopot which is on the coast and not far by train. There's also forest walks just inland.

For best priced flights, look at skyscanner to see where you can fly to from Glasgow and go from there - can you also fly from Prestwick?

3 hours from Glasgow will get you as far as northern Spain, Poland and Germany. Perhaps northern Portugal. If you're happy to fly a bit further, Lisbon and southern Spain will be in reach. There's always loads of well priced UK flights to Malaga, which as well as being a lovely city, has a huge botanical garden that's just on the northern edge of the city and easily accessible mountains inland by train or coach. You could also go to nearer Spanish cities like Alicante, Girona or Barcelona.

HGC2 · 19/02/2026 05:31

Riga or Budapest from Edinburgh, flights reasonable times and prices, both cities pretty, feel safe and are walkable

Ihatemondays1962 · 19/02/2026 21:41

I always recommend Gdansk on these posts. Lots to do, safe and a nice beach nearby.

Came on to say Gdansk.
