Hi has anyone used an eSIM in Italy? I’m looking for recommendations of one with unlimited data?
Was it hard to install? Good signal coverage?
Thanks

Airalo are good, mega easy to install and they do unlimited data for different amounts of time. It’s easy to top them up when you are away too.

My adult children use Saily - it worked perfectly in Turkey, Ireland and Spain. Very easy even for a luddite like me to understand!

I bought one through the airport website because you could choose the exact days that you wanted it for. The ones I found online were 7 or 30 days I think.

You could check out Cardtonic. They offer travel eSIMs, and the setup is pretty straightforward, so it may be worth seeing what Italy plans they currently have. I’d just double-check whether they have an unlimited option, since that seems to be the main thing you’re after.

I use Holafly eSIM. They have an App. It’s really easy to use.

I use Saily, which is really simple to install and use. It’s one of the app-based ones. If you add an amount of data and it turns out not to be enough, adding more takes seconds.

They also have unlimited plans, but I think they would be worse value for most people (and I’m pretty chronically online).

For two weeks I tend to use between 5 and 10 GB.

Unlimited data in Italy usually turns into “unlimited*” with tiny print 😅 Installation is honestly the easy part, scan QR and done in minutes. I’d care more about who uses the local networks well where you’re staying than chasing the word unlimited.

e-SIMs are easy - make sure your phone is compatible (most are). Follow the instructions (sounds obvious), and do make sure you turn off your normal SIM.
Some recommend that you install before you go, I can see the sense in this having struggled with airport wifi on arrival. Unless you are in a place with no wifi anywhere, and you are a heavy user, I am not sure "unlimited" is necessary, especially as you can just "buy more" if needed, and often they come with an app so you can see how much you have used so far. Check also what you are allowed to do (tethering, streaming) We are all different, but I have never broken the 3gb barrier, but I nearly did in Thailand in 2.5 weeks when no wifi, but was £2. It probably won't matter if you are just going to Italy, but if you are doing multiple countries in one trip, you can get a "region" SIM, these are generally bad value (3 times more than the equivalent of buying single country esims), but obviously they offer the benefit of not being hassled to sort yourself out everywhere you go. I can see why they are attractive to some trips.

Or you could just get a UK sim from Lebara, which treats the EU as “home”. I have a 5GB sim in my phone (about £5 a month) which I used for 2 weeks in Italy, using my phone as satnav when driving and only used about half that.

Though probably only useful if your phone can hold two physical sims

Yes I have ID mobile which is 100gb data for £10 a month, and includes EU roaming.

you can also get a Three PAYG sim and buy a data pack, that’s better if you just want a month, and is also worldwide. More expensive than IDmobile though.

so I use my IDmobile sim travelling in Europe, and top up my Three sim for outside Europe.

i’ve done the calculations many times and haven’t found a cheaper way.
