Airport Strikes Italy

Im going to Italy and there are airport strikes planned the day before I go and possibly on date I come back.
My flight is middle of the day and im worried it will be cancelled if strike goes ahead.
I havent been abroad before and im quite anxious about where we will stay or how we will get back. Is there anything I can do in advance?

Something worth remembering is that in most of Europe a "strike" is very rarely an all-out downing of tools by everyone. It's mostly OK to work or not through a strike (often one union wants to strike and two others don't), and there is less of a culture of picketing. So any strike like this will mostly be about reduced service levels rather than total meltdown.

Under EU261, the airlines have a duty to look after you: food, accommodation (within limits - no Sofitel), transport, even phone calls. This applies whatever the cause of the disruption. There is a mistaken belief that EU261 doesn't apply if the disruption is not the airline's fault (which a ground crew strike might or might not be, depending on who works for whom), but that's not the case. All of EU261 applies apart from the best-known bit which is where you get "cash compensation on top" - that only happens if the disruption is clearly something that the airline could and should have been on top of.

Another thing to check is that you have good travel insurance. If possible, the kind that will pay you back if you need to get a taxi into town and check into the Sofitel because nowhere else has room. If something goes wrong, don't wait - call the assistance number on the policy immediately. They may well be able to take over the costs so that you don't have to advance any money.

Finally, make sure you have €100 in cash and at least one card that is not maxed out.
