Staying in UK over summer?

We usually go to Greece or Italy for a week or two in June/July/August. This year we’re thinking of staying in the UK.

Our friends have asked if we could house sit in the countryside (national park) and we have a week booked in a cottage in Cornwall.

DP wants to book a week in Greece for September but I reckon it might be better to just go long haul in late October early November? Our next trip is in January to Barbadoe.

For those who like holidays (it is a holiday thread), how is staying in the UK over the summer? Do you feel rested like you do with an overseas trip?

I like UK holidays, and don't travel abroad over summer for reasons of both weather and budget.

It's a different type of enjoyable to a sun holiday abroad, I would say. You have to embrace the things the UK offers. So if you're national parking, get on all the lovely heritage and scenery stuff there.

It’s fine, as long as you don’t mind the risk of having a rainy week. We were in Cornwall one summer when the dc were small and it rained so much that the village flooded.

Had several UK summer holidays - Cornwall, Lake District, Scotland etc. In many ways, it’s easier because you just pack up your car and go, rather than having the airport hassle. For me, the only due side is that it’s not ‘foreign’. Ie, you’re still going to a British supermarket, rather than exploring a Spanish one.

However, , it’s still a holiday, and can be relaxing and enjoyable.

Yes, you do need to build in weather contingencies.

The UK is at its best in Summer. Perfect time to enjoy it (weather contingencies aside). Long days, beautiful countryside, charming towns, masses of coastline being an island. Much easier to fill the car with all the paraphernalia young children need than getting them on a plane.

Enjoy!

I do enjoy both.
I take my UK holidays in the summer and go abroad January/ May / late September.
UK holidays are most definitely not the same even if you get hot weather though. Much more activity rather than flop.
We always took the DC to a holiday rental of some kind in a seaside resort in summer but it was much harder than flying to a beach hotel.
Now it's usually a cottage or cabin somewhere like the Dales or peak District. Lots of fresh air, walking, pub meals etc.

UK holidays are more expensive , the weather is very unpredictable, & I think I've seen all of the UK that I want to see!
I also try to avoid school holidays, so a summer break in UK for me would be a good (i.e. expensive) hotel in a place unlikely to be attractive to kids.

Absolutely if you plan enough rain options and aren't disappointed about the weather.

The only issue is that it is basically a s/c holiday as there aren't really a lot of areas with nice hotels to spend a week unless you pay an absolute fortune.

I won’t do U.K. summer holidays I would rather stay at home. I love a British holiday in the winter as I know the weather will be rubbish but no way am I spending insane money on somewhere which risks being cold rainy overcrowded and expansive in the summer

youalright · 12/02/2026 19:41

We haven't had a uk holiday for years purely because every time we did it pissed it down all week never again

Why leave the UK when the UK is at its best? I go away May or October, which frees up a wonderful long UK Summer.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 12/02/2026 23:03

We always stay in the UK in the main Summer. I don’t like the weather to be too hot or too cold so try to escape some of the UK winter (currently in Southern Spain), and another week somewhere in Europe May or September/October when it’s hopefully still nice and warm but not too hot.

We did Northumberland in the camper last summer(June), the beaches were lovely, especially bamburgh. We then drove across and did the lake District coast all the way down. Very lucky weather wise too, out of 14 days I think 2 were rainy and 2 were cloudy..

We go to Pembrokeshire every other year. It's beautiful and we love being outside, so we do feel rested. Plus the time together is important.
