What to pack for southern Spain

Will be holidaying in Mojácar end of Feb for a month. The weather looks to be around 18/20 and sunny but reviews say it can feel much cooler. Can anyone advise what people will be wearing? Will it be warm enough for shorts and sandals?

Watching with interest as going 1March…

You need layers. Yes, it will at times be warm enough for shorts and sandals. Other times the wind will freeze you to the bone. I'm a bit higher than Mojacar but as an example at the moment - and usually all through January and February and to an extent March - it can be 6 or 7 degrees in the morning when I drop off the kids at 8.30, then be 23 degrees at 1 or 2pm in the afternoon. You need layers and be regularly putting them on and taking them off. Oh, and take a good waterproof jacket and boots too. When it rains in March, it can really rain.

If it’s sunny and there’s not much wind then yes you should be able to wear shorts and sandals. Other days you will probably want jeans, a hoody and trainers. Expect to have to wear a sweater and light coat in the evening. I’m near Malaga at the moment and haven’t worn my shorts yet (although I’ve spotted others in them). I wore sandals yesterday but with full length leggings. Mostly I’ve been wearing lightweight jeans (Halara), a T shirt and a fleece which is coming on and off depending on the sun. Previous years it’s felt warmer than this, but at least I’ve mainly missed the rain (arrived last Thursday).

I would say more jeans and hoodie weather. Big coat at times. It’s not hot here at this time of year and with all the storms we’re having…I don't think you’ll be wearing shorts.

Thanks. That’s all really helpful. Hubby keeps saying it’s going to be boiling but I thought it would be cooler. He’ll no doubt just pack the night before……

It's quite probable it will be both! If you're staying for a whole month you are likely to see quite a lot of variation.

I agree with taking some layers, cardigan, light coat etc if its cooler in the evenings. In the day I'd have linen trousers/shorts. One thing to note though, is that Spanish dress for the season- so even on what we think is a hot day and we'd be in shorts/T-shirt, locals might have wintery hats/gloves/heavy coats and scarves on!

Ah yes! It can be 26C outside but if the calendar says it's winter they'll be dressed for a ski trip. The English are pretty famous for moaning about the weather but they've got nothing on the Spanish for that 😃.

I've noticed that too. Aren't they boiling?

I'm going to the mountains between Malaga and Granada in a couple of weeks and thankfully the forecast looks like it's improving but it will be cold between late afternoon and mid morning but warm up during the day such that if I go out in the morning for a walk, I'll need warm clothing but will have taken most of my outer layers off my early afternoon.

So yes OP, layers and prepare for rain, but expect to shed a lot of them when it warms up.

Just adding to this thread to say that today has been miserable and right now it’s totally peeing it down - whereas yesterday was definitely shorts and sandals weather! So as everyone has said - be prepared for anything and everything!

Are you at Mojacar Pueblo, or the Playa?
We used to love breakfast at Dulce Vita, down on the beach.

RummidgeGeneral · 13/02/2026 19:20

Even in the Canaries in March evenings were chilly with a cold wind.

Beautifulbracelet · 14/02/2026 20:45

Can I ask what people wear when they go out for dinner. Is it quite a casual place? X
