Cost of a two week holiday

I know this is a “how long is a piece of string” question and depends on budget but just curious - does £5600 sound ok as a basic cost for a two-week self-catering holiday (Europe, August) for four people (two adults, one teen dc and one younger dc)?

It is a two-centre holiday, one city week and one chilling out in nature. Both weeks very nice but not luxury accommodation with great facilities including excellent swimming pools. One of our kids is now 15 so we do need two rooms which really bumps up the cost.

Travel : Flights are at sensible times and with hire car, total travel cost £1500.

This seems like a good price to me, but I wonder if I’m kidding myself and I’d do better booking two weeks with Tui!

Actually I would explore the Thailand suggestion. If you fly indirect it would probably come in at a similar amount to what you’re spending in Europe. Hotels and eating out at extremely cheap as are activities. I’m increasingly of the view that Europe is becoming unaffordable.

Sounds expensive to me… my only comparison I can give is 1 week in Egypt AI for £3.5k

But was that for 2 rooms or entire family in a single room? I would have expected a week AI in Egypt to be more than £3.5k if you are booking 2 rooms in the hotel.

beAsensible1 · 10/02/2026 08:02

That’s pretty decent for 2k for 4 people

who is getting AI for 2 weeks for less than that??

TeamGeriatric · 10/02/2026 08:07

So that's averaging £143/night per room (assuming that your 2 weeks is 14 nights) which sounds very reasonable indeed to me. I prefer for us all to sleep in the same room, our kids are marginally younger than your kids, and it varies what we spend/night based on what's available (I tend to book quite last minute) and obviously location too can really vary the price, by that I mean San Sebastian is far more expensive than Bilbao. I think if you are happy it's the best choice from what's available then just book it!

But this is only £2800 per week, so unless they spend £700 in a week on food, it is cheaper?

Nobody can really say as you haven’t said where you’re planning to go.

We are doing a similar two week two destination holiday in Europe this summer.
Flights £150 x 5= £750
Car hire £450
Apartment 1 week= £1200
Eurocamp type place 1 week= £1300
=£3700
+
Spending money = £2300
=£6000

We actually spent two weeks in Thailand for similar.

Flight £600 x 5= =£3000
Two weeks accommodation
=£1500
Spending money £2000
=££6500

I just worked hard to get a decent deal for our holiday by booking it independently & DH complained about the cost (& it’s the equivalent of what you are spending for one week as it’s an expensive destination!)

Holidays get more expensive with teenagers as separate rooms are needed, meals out cost more & you are paying the inflated school holiday prices.
Personally I think it’s worth it for a holiday you are going to look forward to. We only have a few summer holidays left before our teenagers will be doing their own thing & we will be able to travel off peak.

We did an AI TUI package shortly after COVID and while it was obviously nice to get away we ended up paying more to eat out as the food was bland, the dining areas overrun and the buffet had flies on. As pps have said you need to spend a lot to get a good AI experience.

Go to Krakow!

Amazing sights and experiences for kids, food is cheap, as is accommodation there are the thermal baths and do many other great things!

skiskateswim · 10/02/2026 20:46

We spent 2 weeks in Thailand as well for similar. Koh Samui weather is good in the summer

Verite1 · 10/02/2026 20:57

We did 11 nights in Slovenia for less than that. B and b in really nice hotels. And it was an amazing holiday. I wouldn’t want to go AI so no point comparing prices for me!

GOAT26 · 11/02/2026 13:46

If the OP did 11 nights on their existing itinerary that would also cost less than what a fortnight will cost.

At the end of the day if it’s what you want to do, where you want to stay and you can afford it then it’s worth it.

Obviously 11 days would cost less than 14, but we were staying B and B in really nice hotels (generally more expensive) rather than self-catering. I was mainly responding as OP had stated that she wanted to go to Slovenia but it was too expensive. I was just pointing out that it wasn't necessarily.

Also - following on from this, it might be worth looking at Vietnam. Flights were expensive, but accommodation, food, transport once there was very very cheap. If you take into account cost of food etc in Europe, it might not come out that different.

fallo · 12/02/2026 15:20

That sounds reasonable to me?!

FriedFalafels · 13/02/2026 06:48

£1400pp for 2 weeks in summer isn’t bad if that includes activities, nice accommodation etc. It sounds like you have 2 rooms, so effectively paying 4 adults.

I’m not a package holiday sort of person either. Prefer more travel and adventure. However I see a lot on this forum where people are told they’ll be stuck with beach and pool holidays until their child is older. Therefore you will get a fair few telling you that their AI is cheaper, and those people may not see the value in other styles of travel that may cost more. I personally don’t see the value in an AI as one of my favourite things on holiday is the local food. It is what makes us all unique. As are our holiday budgets. All that matters is that you can afford it and it is what you all want to do as a holiday
