My big mistake with our Japan flight booking

HelloandThankU · 02/02/2026 20:37

Hi. I booked flights to Japan with Japan Airlines through Booking.com for the first time. The booking was for my husband, our two teenage children, and me. At the time of booking, there was a space for first and last names but no option to include a middle name. My husband said it wasn’t necessary, so we left it out. The total cost of the tickets was £6,100. Unfortunately, these are non-refundable tickets.

After downloading the JAL mobile app, my flight details appeared, but my husband’s did not show up in his app. This concerned me, so we called Japan Airlines. We were told that the names on the tickets must exactly match the passports, including middle names, and that we could be denied boarding if they do not match.

I don’t have a middle name, but my husband and children do. I wasn’t aware that Japan Airlines was so strict about this. We contacted JAL, but they said they cannot amend the names because the tickets were purchased through a third party. We then contacted Booking.com, and they are currently in communication with JAL, but we have not received any update yet.
After researching online, I found that many people reported being unable to get name corrections with JAL when booking through a third party, although some said they still went to the airport and hoped for the best. I don’t want to take that risk in case my family are denied boarding on the return flight. We cannot afford to buy another set of tickets. I know this was a serious mistake, and I feel awful about it — I was really hoping to take my children to see my parents back home.

I’ve been on the phone a lot with JAL and Booking.com, and my child with autism heard me. I feel like I upset him, and I worry that I made him sad. Has anyone successfully added a middle name with Japan Airlines when the ticket was purchased through a third-party site?

OP don't cancel. It will be fine without middle names and you can still enter middle names at the check-in stage.

Derbee · 03/02/2026 01:27

Could you have your passports reissued without middle names? Cheaper to do new passports than book new flights?

Paddington1234 · 03/02/2026 01:50

What a rort! It wouls take employing 2 people or more likely setting up a bot, for minor changes like this to be made by the airline. They should have an error system where you can backtrack and alter any details. Would cost them absolutely nothing. Doesn't change security as you still turn up at the airport with your passport. Hope it goes well OP.

This is such a strange thread. I have NEVER used my middle name booking a flight despite it being on my passport. I've flown all over the world. It's well known that despite airlines saying your name has to match your passport, they do not hold you to it for middle names. In fact, many people have two middle names on their passports but only use one to fly, or none. Forget all about it - it will be fine. And have a great trip!

Livinginvnam · 03/02/2026 02:33

We fly around Asia quite a lot. Sometimes I put my full name in (including my middle name), sometimes not. I have NEVER been denied boarding. This does include Japan. Sometimes we have an issue with my daughter's name order being the wrong way round, but it just means a few minutes longer at check-in. Asian airlines are not Ryanair, thankfully.

AussieManque · 03/02/2026 02:47

This is why one should never book through a third party site. You can use them to look for flights, but always book directly with the airline, otherwise you end up with problems like this where it's very difficult to fix problems, changed dates etc.

I think it's up to the gate agents whether they'll let you board without middle names. I have flown long haul around Asia throughout my life and only started inserting my middle name about 10 years ago, but 2 years used my points to book a ticket and for some reason my middle names were excluded, I was still able to fly fine.

@Pibrea @MondayYogurt The problem is the return flight is from my hometown, Akita. Not many international travelers fly from there, so the staff may be stricter and could refuse boarding if the ticket details don’t match exactly

What would happen then though? You'd be stuck there with no way home? I'd imagine they would let you on the plane because they want tourists to leave on time.

Missey85 · 03/02/2026 02:51

I'd be screwed then since I don't have a middle name 😂

OhDear111 · 02/02/2026 21:31

So why didn’t you book direct? A bit odd to use booking.com. All bookings should match passport. I thought that was standard.

Edited

Most people use Booking.com, Expedia or SkyScanner to book their flights now, it saves a huge amount of money and allows you to keep flights with different companies as a single booking.

Cattywillow · 03/02/2026 03:13

I had this issue when I went in 2024. I booked for myself and my mother. The travel agent didn’t put mY mum’s middle name on her ticket. I also read how strict ANL are and I was really worried about it and did lots of googling. In the end we just hoped for the best and it was a non issue. No one queried it. Good luck, it’s so stressful.

HelloandThankU · 02/02/2026 21:37

All we could see were the fields for first name and last name. What I should have done was enter my middle name in the first name field. I know I am so stupid.

I thought you didn't have a middle name?

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 03/02/2026 03:23

Did you enter passport details when you booked?
If so DO NOT get new passports

When ypu check in, do it online and add the middle names. The boarding pass will then be the same as the passport

I thought you didn't have a middle name?

I see you replied to this question earlier.

i think I'd just forget about it ' as many have suggested just include them at the check in stage.

user1492757084 · 03/02/2026 03:56

Pack and proceed as if you are going.

You have nothing to lose because they won't give a refund.
Show up early and chance it.

I actually got told off at the airport when we last flew for including my sons’ middle names on their ticket (it meant their last name was cut off as I guess the system ran out of characters although they don’t have very long names, even with their middle names included). Damned if you do, damned if you don’t I imagine! I hope you are able to get this sorted OP.

Or different airlines have different rules.

Angeloom · 03/02/2026 04:21

Use the booking reference from booking.com to log into JAL and add your passport info there including middle names. Should be fine.

bert3400 · 03/02/2026 04:33

Never ever book flights through a third party. Always directly with the airline. No1 rule of travel

babyproblems · 03/02/2026 04:42

Keroppi · 02/02/2026 21:33

Perhaps escalate it with booking.com as it was their error - go through like you're booking a new ticket and take a screenshot of the webpage that shows you can't enter a middle name in a text box. Then send it to them and state the onus is on them to sort out.. perhaps find the CEO or customer relations email and forward your communications on to them and politely state you're seeking resolution in accordance with their complaints policy or what not
Use the magic word "ombudsman" lol

I would also try your luck contacting the consumer right champions/money people in the newspapers.

This.

I am horrified at the cost of these flights!!!!!! This is absolutely insane. I also think you shouldn’t worry about upsetting your child… people make mistakes, it’s part of life: it’s not a personal attack on the child so they have no real reason to be upset. They might be disappointed if they can’t travel but such is life and you’re doing all you can!

Roomforapony · 03/02/2026 04:54

Our son flew with JAL in October 2025 from Tokyo Haneda, only his first and last name were on the booking and he had no problems even though his middle name is on his passport.
The only issue at check-in was that he looks very different from his passport photo, he’d lost a lot of weight while studying in Japan for over a year plus he’d shaved his beard off. The check-in staff were very confused as he looked like a teenager again! His siblings now call him Benjamin Button😂

As PP’s have said please contact your credit card provider if you booked using a credit card as there are protections that may apply.

Copenhagener · 03/02/2026 05:09

My partner has an unusual letter in his middle name, and airlines always tell him to leave it off entirely - including on flights to Asia.

For what it’s worth, I have two long middle names that never fit, so when I flew to Japan with an Asian airline, I didn’t include them and had no issue.

I think you’re worrying too much.

hollytheheroic · 03/02/2026 05:36

I can't see how it would qualify for a section 75 claim on a credit card. They haven't failed to provide goods or services, plus there's no debtor/creditor/supplier link as it was booked through a third party rather than the airline directly.

winterwarmer8274 · 03/02/2026 05:47

You will be fine - I have never heard of anyone being denied boarding because they didn't put their middle name on the booking.

Memo88 · 03/02/2026 06:19

Slightly ‘out there’ perhaps, but when I was a child my mum forgot to put my middle name on my passport and it’s been like that ever since (despite there being a middle name on my birth certificate). Could you get new passports without middle names?

Cattywillow · 03/02/2026 06:20

I think the bigger problem would be having a middle name on the booking and no middle name on the passport because then there’s a name they can’t check against anything, if that makes sense. I hope you get your trip OP and have a wonderful time.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/02/2026 06:29

Why do people add nothing useful other than tell poster she’s made a mistake when she has acknowledged that already and probably feels really upset and anxious about this.
OP - people on this thread have commented that they have flown with the same airline as you without their middle names and it was fine. So hold that thought in your head and ignore the unhelpful comments.
