My big mistake with our Japan flight booking

Hi. I booked flights to Japan with Japan Airlines through Booking.com for the first time. The booking was for my husband, our two teenage children, and me. At the time of booking, there was a space for first and last names but no option to include a middle name. My husband said it wasn’t necessary, so we left it out. The total cost of the tickets was £6,100. Unfortunately, these are non-refundable tickets.

After downloading the JAL mobile app, my flight details appeared, but my husband’s did not show up in his app. This concerned me, so we called Japan Airlines. We were told that the names on the tickets must exactly match the passports, including middle names, and that we could be denied boarding if they do not match.

I don’t have a middle name, but my husband and children do. I wasn’t aware that Japan Airlines was so strict about this. We contacted JAL, but they said they cannot amend the names because the tickets were purchased through a third party. We then contacted Booking.com, and they are currently in communication with JAL, but we have not received any update yet.
After researching online, I found that many people reported being unable to get name corrections with JAL when booking through a third party, although some said they still went to the airport and hoped for the best. I don’t want to take that risk in case my family are denied boarding on the return flight. We cannot afford to buy another set of tickets. I know this was a serious mistake, and I feel awful about it — I was really hoping to take my children to see my parents back home.

I’ve been on the phone a lot with JAL and Booking.com, and my child with autism heard me. I feel like I upset him, and I worry that I made him sad. Has anyone successfully added a middle name with Japan Airlines when the ticket was purchased through a third-party site?

I very much doubt this will an issue at all. I’ve missed off my middle name before and it was fine. I would not lose money/cancel your tickets.

Same here - my name is similar to Penelope Jane Pitstop, this is also reflected on my passport, but I don’t think I ever add Jane when booking, unless there’s a specific field for middle names?!

Presumably its not about middle names per se, its just about your passport needing to match your ticket. So all names.

This ^ is the issue.

Your flight booking (obviously) has to be identical with your passport!

The safety first approach is to make sure the names on your flight booking are identical with the names on your passport.

@SENsupportplease , your passport must show your full name.

Names: the names we use in passports - GOV.UK

Can you kindly point out where it said that on the linked page?
Thanks

I am seeing this:
However, there are some exceptions when we will issue a passport to a customer, using the name they supplied on their passport application, even though it is different to the name on their supporting documents.

What are the exceptions?

Ive always understood they have to match the document.

Im not sure exceptions are 'I forgot to put my full name when I booked a flight'

What I asking is where is the obligation to add a middle name the pages I am reading say should not must

Eg a married woman can have both names listed and choose which version is on the ID page

Ruby0707 · 03/02/2026 18:08

I flew with JAL but they were a partner airline with the original booking through BA.

I phoned JAL to try and change my seats as I couldn't do it through BA and JAL said the same thing to me about the middle name. I checked back through the booking site and there was no option to put in a middle name.

I left it and it was fine, middle name isn't needed.

Have a great time in Japan. We loved it

Switcher · 03/02/2026 18:16

I'm sure it will be fine. I went to Australia on a passport in my maiden name but the ticket was in my other passport that's in my married name. I was bricking it but had booked it that way to prioritise getting back into the UK on the settled status passport. There was no real way of satisfying both countries' immigration requirements without picking a name. The opinions I got were 50/50 on it won't work vs. smile and nod. The latter was all it took.

I appreciate it’s hard to understand but really, passports do not need to include the middle name

Its must

Must use the name on the other documents

Customers must apply for their passport using the name they use for all official purposes. The name on a customer’s passport application must match the name on their UK or overseas supporting documents (for example, their birth certificate).

HelloandThankU · 03/02/2026 18:22

@Ruby0707 People who were able to fly with a name that didn’t exactly match their passport were probably just lucky. We’re flying in July, so I’m worried about ending up in a situation like that person’s— especially since they seemed to have booked directly with Japan Airlines, yet JAL still refused to change their name.

The story:
I booked a ticket in June for a ticket to Japan using Japan airlines at an original ticket price of $1700. My flight is in a few days and I’ve just discovered that my first and last names were reversed on the ticket (lastname, firstname). Since I’ve never flown internationally before, I don’t know what to expect but everything I read online says the ticket must match exactly as on the passport.
I called Japan Airlines to do a name correction but was told they simply cannot offer this service, and it’s a huge risk to fly with this reversed ordered name on the ticket and almost certainly would get turned away by security so my only choice was to refund (for partial payment since it was a non refundable ticket) and buy another ticket at current rate.
Since the flight is a few days away, prices are sky high, and to make matters worse, they didn’t have any more economy tickets (even though I’d be giving up mine to buy it right back) and was told I had to buy premium economy. New ticket price was $5000 round trip.
Maybe it’s just me, but asking a customer to pay an additional $5000 to fix a mistake as simple as mixing up firstname with lastname is insane, and really bad customer service.
I was desperate and caved, and just bought the new ticket with Japan Airlines so I can stay flying with my family whose also on the plane, but I feel very taken advantage of.

Regarding getting new passports and leaving out the middle name, we can’t lie by saying that three family members’ current passports were stolen or damaged when they weren’t. And then, right after returning, telling the same lie just to get three new passports with the middle names added isn’t something we would do. So, no matter what people might think—calling me foolish for not doing it—we’ve decided against it after careful consideration. Still, I really appreciate everyone’s suggestion. I feel frustrated with myself. I was raised to be extremely honest, but sometimes I feel I need to be more flexible for the sake of my family. Still, whenever I consider doing that, I end up worrying about the consequences afterward. I know this is a part of my personality I need to work on.

@diddl It may seem obvious in hindsight, but I honestly didn’t know that a middle name could be used as a first name. I always thought a middle name was strictly treated as a middle name, and I assumed that if a middle name field exists, you’re required to fill it in.

Now I’ll just wait to hear back from Booking.com about JAL’s response. It’s a huge amount of money, but at the end of the day, we’re in a much better position than my friend who is suffering from a serious illness.

ok op.

its an easy solution to save £6k if needed. People renew passports for all sorts of reasons - a client last year because she hated her photo.

Middle names not needed for student loans so no need to immediately replace on return.

I think what you call honesty here is actually a lack of any flexibility to find solutions. Usually it’s fine but this time consequences are a real shame.

Yarboosucks · 03/02/2026 18:35

You can change your passport at will and don't need to lie or invent a reason and of course for a fee!

You don't need to include your middle name in your passport. I hate mine and it is not on my passport.

For student finance, you only need to provide passport, so there is no issue there.

Really this is all much easier than you are imagining OP!

You’ve misunderstood me. I think the part after OP says ‘the story:’ is someone else’s experience, which OP has found on another forum, then copied and pasted it here to illustrate that someone else was forced to buy a new ticket.

Did she fly JAL at that time?

She's already said when she has booked prevoius tickets to other places she didnt use her family's middle names and it wasnt a problem

It seems to be a problem for JAL

Yes except I only use my first name and last name for all official puropse and am old enough to have documents which have both versions.

And as the PP office has a policy to verify the individual if Booking failed to amend thr OPs data a quick call to find out how to name change would be a cheaper fix.

MissMarplesKnittingNeedles · 03/02/2026 18:57

I deed polled my name once because a ferry ticket had been booked in the wrong name!

MissMarplesKnittingNeedles · 03/02/2026 18:58

And my child has just had a new passport for a name change.

Thats fine for the husband who possibly may have other documents he could supply which has other names on it (ie not his middle name) but I doubt that applies to the kids, I would imagine they've only got their birth certs, not sure how old they are
