Just packing for flight tomorrow. Looking at the weather forecast, it looks like there’s no point packing sandals. Or should I?

We’re planning to do the excursion up Teide and do the cable car. Will a hoodie be warm enough or do we need a jacket as well

Was there a month ago and you’ll definitely need a coat for Teide

TaffetaPhrases · 25/01/2026 11:49

I used to live on Tenerife. You’ll need a light jacket or anorak. If you’re walking around near the teleférico you’ll need sturdy trainers.

Pack the sandals - you can nearly always find sun if you’re prepared to travel to various parts of the island.

The buses are so cheap to use, it will be warm in the south.

Needlenardlenoo · 25/01/2026 11:58

I went up Teide a few weeks ago. You potentially need a coat, a base layer, gloves and a hat. DH was OK with just a fleece but he is hardy.

Badacrowe · 25/01/2026 11:59

For non Teide bits I’d definitely pack sandals especially if you’re in the south.

The cable car can be cancelled for weather alll year year round - normally formally announced early ish each day on the official web site. When I tried to go (unfortunately cancelled) I planned long trousers, trainers, layers inc fleece, waterproof and hat). The trip I did go on was to view Teide and I was glad of a fleece (November time).

Yes I really enjoyed using the buses!

We have always had jackets on whilst up Tiede in July/ August so you will definitely need more in the winter months. Do you have your access permit sorted?

zurigo · 25/01/2026 12:04

Mt Teide can be chilly and windy even in the middle of summer, so I'd definitely take layers if you're planning to go up there in January. You should have sturdy shoes or decent trainers too if you're going to do any walking while in the Mt Teide NP. Lava is sharp and can rip more flimsy footwear if you stumble.

Access permit? We’re going on one of the TUI excursions and they didn’t mention it. I’m going you’re going to say it’s only needed if you’re hiking up there on your own.

I’m in Lanzarote at the moment.

lots of people in sandals. I’m in walking sandals myself. I spent yesterday swimming and lying on the beach in a swimsuit.

can’t comment on Mt Teige.

@Bollindger@Badacrowe
DP is very good with buses. We went to Majorca last year and travelled all over the island on the bus.

TIB buses are so much better than we have here.
In fact, there was an excursion to the lighthouse at Formentor, which was about £50pp. He got us there by bus and when we looked at our bank statement, it had only cost us £12 total!

I might have to go to the supermarket and buy a jacket. I’ve lost loads of weight so threw my jackets out, keeping my big winter coats, but planning to buy a jacket in spring in whatever size I am then. Thank goodness for Sainsburys Tu!

If you just plan on going up part of the way up Tiede you don’t need a permit. You ride the cable car, stay in that small area and then head back down. If you plan on going to the top (which I would very much recommend for anyone reading this) then you need a permit, and normally have to apply for these months in advance. www.reservasparquesnacionales.es/real/ParquesNac/usu/html/detalle-actividad-oapn.aspx?cen=2&act=1

I brought my dryrobe with me as I wasn’t sure how cold the sea would be and I thought I might need it.

i am therefore being a dry robe wanker on Lanzarote. I have not seen anyone else with one (although lots of Germans with poncho towels).

it came in useful to lie on on the beach.

CluelessAboutBiology · 25/01/2026 13:23

@AnotherNam I won’t be walking to the top, I’m not fit enough and my k ees would steadfastly refuse!

@BooksandCats123 thanks for the webcam link, I shall have a look at it now.

I'm also packing for Tenerife tomorrow! Not planning on going up tiede but have packed the usual summer gear, plus a cardigan and a pair of jeans if it gets chilly and I'll be wearing a sweatshirt and light weight biker jacket to travel in..I do have a friend that arrived Saturday abd they've just sent me a photo of blue sky's and not a cloud in sight -fingers crossed it stays like that !

Badacrowe · 25/01/2026 14:03

I am so envious of those heading to Tenerife right now!

I also agree you get a lot of useful information from webcams or similar of the place you’re going.

Buses are really cheap. I used the Titsa and Transit Apps, really helpful.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 25/01/2026 16:50

Ive only worn sandals, been here a while

I remember someone telling me that. Suppose they’re trying to encourage people off the roads.
