Holiday ideas brits abroad

Can anyone suggest a summer holiday to go on for two adults and a two year old. I’m looking for somewhere that isn’t the typical ‘Brit’s abroad’ destination. Not that there is anything wrong with that at all I would just love to find somewhere with all that’s needed for a 2 year old but also some culture?

What does a 2 year old need ? Just a pool really surely

Yes, and OP wants that but also something for the adults too.

The list is endless OP! There's not many parts of Europe that don't have a mixture of things. A Greek island would be good. Or Malta. Always gets loads of sniffy responses but we've been twice and loved it. Loads of brilliant museums and ancient sites and beautiful towns to wander round and easy to navigate on the buses.

Portugal is lovely, although the Algarve is a bit brits abroad in places we stayed in Lagos which was not so much. Also Lisbon or Porto if you want more culture.

We did Granada and Sicily with our (then) two year old :)

Valencia served us well as a good location for a holiday with toddlers. Nice big sandy beach, child friendly museums, pedestrianised old town, playgrounds…. We found a hotel with a kids menu and a little splash pool. It was perfect.

There’s. Lovely kids friendly hotel in Rovinj Croatia.
You can fly into Ljubljana or Trieste and drive down. Lots of nice towns along the coast there like Porec, Piran. Can stay a night at airport destination on way back to break up trip and explore city also.

Ibiza, st Elulia or Es Cana. West coast of France, further south you go you will need French. Ronce Les Bain, Les Mathes, La Palmyre, Ile D’Oleron.

The list is endless though, where do you want to go?

Tui blue budoni in Sardinia, splash pool for your two year old, flamingos between hotel and beach, stunning walks through the forest and along the beach, pasta making classes

What time do you plan to go and do you need AI or would you be happy with s/c?

I would stay away from the Med July/August, far too hot to enjoy sightseeing. If you aren't bound to school holidays, go mid June or September.

If you search carefully, you can find lovely resorts in Majorca which don't scream Brits abroad. We went s/c twice, DD was 2 and 4. You have culture, nature, beaches, caves. It's very child friendly.

Sicily or Rhodes are great for a mix of pool holiday and culture.

Cala D'Or in Mallorca can be good for little ones as all the beaches are small coves so shallow and calm, they're also stunning. If you go in September the weather will be very warm but not July/August hot and the sea will still be very warm. There's lots of choices of accommodation and you can pick quieter areas, it also attracts an international clientelle, lots of Scandinavians and Germans.

Santa Eulalia in Ibiza or many places on Menorca would also suit.

We stayed on the beach (Playa de las Arenas) at Valencia with a 4 & 6 year old, easy to travel into the city and also a nice beach. Also went to Santorini and Naxos the previous year, Naxos was probably more peaceful than Valencia from memory. San Sebastian is really lovely in Northern Spain, we combined with time in Bilbao, my kids were older when we went there but no reason I wouldn't have taken a 2 year old. Note if you go somewhere that is much more frequented by the Spanish, the Spanish eat much later than we would, earliest 8pm usually for restaurants serving dinner.

We loved almyrida in Crete last year. Small and a good mixture of nationalities as well as lot of locals. Not very Brits abroad at all. Lots of interesting places near by to visit.

tbh. We’ve found that most places are not hugely Brits abroad if you don’t go for the big tui type hotels or resorts that are particularly aimed at Brits. We normally stay in cheaper hotels which seem to attract a bigger mix of nationalities.
