April holiday abroad

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a family holiday abroad during the Easter school holidays that isn’t going to be hugely expensive? We’d love to go to Italy but not sure about the weather?

thank you!

Budget?

We’re often in the (French) alps at Easter. About an hour from Italy. It can be lovely (tshirts, 20-25 degrees) but that’s not guaranteed. I’ve also been to Rome in March (bit rainy and about 15 degrees, and the amalfi coast in May (massive storm). You could be lucky but unless you’re very hardy you won’t be swimming!

What sort of holiday are you after? Self catering? AI? Fly or drive…. And yes, budget.

We prefer self catering, away from big cities but in traditional towns near restaurants. Budget about £1500-£2000

The Canary Islands would work really well - which one depends on what you want, but Lanzarote has loads of options and the weather would be great.

You'll really struggle with that budget in the school holidays especially at relatively short notice.

You could try a search on the jet2holidays.com website (also Easyjet or Tui) to see if there is anything available.

Also look at flight only and an apartment on Vrbo or similar. Ryanair tend to be cheapest, especially if you can minimise luggage. Or if Jet2 airports suit, a large cabin bag is included as standard, which is manageable for a warm weather holiday.

We've booked Sicily

Including flights? School holidays? And Italy? That is a very ambitious budget!

You may need to accept a less popular destination and not so nice weather.

I would look into a city break with an AirBnB instead of a week-long warm weather trip.

We had a great 10 days in Barcelona last Easter (2025) for flights (easyJet) and accommodation (Airbnb) for £1,800 for family of 4. Self catering though. It was warm-ish, we stayed by the beach but was too windy and cold for swimming really. There’s loads to do on the beaches (football, volleyball, table tennis, and skating along the front). Lots in Barcelona and good transport up and down coast and inland for exploring. Major water parks would all still be shut in April tho.
Or look for cheap Canary Islands or Cape Verde deals. They do exist, particularly if you search for free child places on Tui. I hope you find something!

Beware that 25th April to 1st May is high season in Italy as schools tend to bridge the gap between those two national holidays.

South of Italy in the Puglia region is lovely and not too crowded in April! We went around Easter last year and the weather was great. You could look for flight options between Bari or Brindisi whichever is more affordable for your dates.
