Would you travel to Thailand 4 months pregnant?

We booked a 2 week trip just before finding out I was pregnant.
Seems a bit borderline - just wanted to ask what would you do and why?
Has anyone cancelled a trip for being pregnant?

Thank you!

I would! I think 4 months is the nicest time to travel as you’ll have a little bump but be over the worst feeling of sickness (hopefully). And you get a bit of energy in the second trimester so it feels like the nicest pregnancy time!

just wear compression socks on the place and do little walks up the isle every now and again to keep your blood flowing and don’t take any major risks while away with foot or activities and you will be fine!

Probably not as I wouldn't have been able to fully relax. Somewhere closer to the UK / somewhere with amazing hospitals I would have preferred. I went to Crete at 12 weeks!

Yes. I went to New York 5 months pregnant. It's nice having those memories and telling my dd about it. 4 months is a good time, it's better than going when you're further along.

Only thing that would make me wary is food hygiene/ hygiene in general. Depends where you going of course, I’ve travelled a bit more rurally when I was young and hygiene was an issue, I had very regular stomach issues from food not being properly refrigerated etc

I went to Tunisia when I was 5 months pregnant. The heat etc was fine but I did worry about the food side of things. Shorter flight than Thailand.

I spent 6 months in Thialand - it would depend where where you are going - nice resort and not too far away from a decent hotel - probably fine. Small shack on a little island that can only be reached by boat - give it a miss.

I wouldn’t go to Thailand if I was pregnant at all. Hygiene reason as well as high risk of Zika virus can cause severe birth defects. Could you possibly change your destination?

BreezyPeachGoose · 19/01/2026 16:08

What impact does it have on your travel insurance premium?

user593 · 19/01/2026 16:13

I love Thailand (going in March with my young DC) but I wouldn’t go pregnant because of Zika virus. I cancelled a trip to Barbados when I found I was pregnant with DC2 in similar circumstances and BA refunded my flights upon receipt of confirmation I was pregnant (without a fee, the hotel was refundable).

Sidge · 19/01/2026 17:00

Thailand has a risk of Zika virus which can cause birth defects in developing foetuses. The risk is highest in the first trimester but risk continues through the whole pregnancy.

There are also other risks such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, dengue, rabies and chikungunya virus.

I think when pregnant you need to rethink your travel plans.

Dinkiedoo · 19/01/2026 17:24

Please don't. Zika virus can cause all sorts of problems and can be asymptomatic . Mosquitoes love pregnant women
Also top 5 destination for travellers diarrhoea

parkezvous · 19/01/2026 17:35

Yes

Nincompoo · 19/01/2026 17:37

No, but the. I had very complicated pregnancies and very premature children so I’m probably more risk adverse than most.

flying that way pregnant would be bloody awful.

ThisHangryTiger · 19/01/2026 17:55

No, there is a risk of the Zika virus which can cause birth defects.

travelanxious91 · 20/01/2026 09:01

Thank you so much everyone. We will cancel, but we will maybe go somewhere without zika/other risk.

I'm also pregnant and live in Asia but I'm avoiding a lot of places due to zika risk

Peonies12 · 20/01/2026 10:20

I personally wouldnt. But I was paranoid in my pregnancy due to previous miscarriages. We had a great trip to Portugal when I was 20 weeks, it’s a good time for travel.
