Has anyone been to Montenegro without a car?

Looking at Montenegro for this year’s holiday. But would we be able to get around well enough without having to hire a car. Would like a few day/half day trips. Thanks

There are trains but I'm interested in finding out more

I went last year and hired a car. Tbf the villa we rented was in a village near Tivat rather than in Kotor or Budva, . The buses are famously unreliable and I don’t think I saw any trains. We used our rented car a lot, to go to Durmitor national park, Lake Skadjar, Kotor and Perast and to the cable car ride outside Kotor.
The roads are quite difficult though. The new motorway was still under construction and very busy. We queued for absolutely ages to get into a car park in Kotor. And the driving is quite chaotic - if you hesitate at a junction someone will pull out in front of you into the teeniest tiniest space. And in the coastal towns there are cars parked in any and every available space,
The freedom and convenience was fantastic though. Stopping to take in the amazing scenery whenever we wanted. Stopping at pubs and cafes in the middle of nowhere.
If you do decide to rent a car to go to Lake Skadjar a word of warning - google maps took us on a tiny bumpy road inland for about 10 miles with a steep drop at the side. There was no phone signal there and it was very very hot weather. We realised later that it was set to avoid toll roads. The 80p toll on the return journey was money well spent.
It’s a stunningly beautiful country with loads of different types of things to do and see. We flew to Dubrovnik and drove across the small border to Tivat. We visited Kotor and Budva. Did a speedboat trip , the cable car, Durmitor National park is beautiful as was Lake Skadjar. Tivat is nice. Podgorica wasn’t particularly recommended for a six day stay. We spent our last day and night In Dubrovnik. Enjoy. 😊

Thanks, that’s really useful. I have never driven a left hand drive abroad and I’m not sure I feel confident enough on those types of roads for my first time. We are looking at 3 nights in Budva and 4 in Kotor to make it manageable without a car, but would like to have a chance to go inland too

Being in Kotor and Budva should be much more doable than on the Lustica Peninsula I would think. The driving in Montenegro is pretty bad. If you’re flying into Podgorica there will be more public transport than from Tivat I would think.
