Please can anyone advise which region/ town in the Greek side of Cyprus is good to go to with kids - age 11 and 14?
We will stay in a villa and hire a car but good to be in walking distance of one or two restaurants.

I heard yesterday that Cyprus is on the governments travel warning list due to regional tensions. I’m not sure if some areas are safer than others though. It wasn’t a total no travel warning.

Yes I heard that along with Turkey and Dubai

Cyprus is completely safe to travel to, the two sovereign bases are miles away from the tourist areas.

Coral Bay near Paphos might tick all your boxes. It's a small but lively resort with a good beach with watersports etc and a strip with restaurants and bars. Early April isn't particularly warm though, you will get some nice days but it can be rainy. If you rent a villa make sure it has a heated pool.

Check your travel insurance if you are travelling to an area that the government have issued warnings about.

Cyprus is lovely by the way (biased!).

Melarus · 16/01/2026 17:56

I went once at Easter (near Paphos) and it wasn't all that warm. The hotel hadn't even filled its pool yet.

Miles as in more than one? Pissouri is right next to a sovereign base area, barely a mile. Limassol is even nearer. Paralimni, Protaras and Ayia Napa are all quite close too.

I don’t think there is anything to worry about in any case.

YelramBob · 16/01/2026 18:23

Sorry yes you're right, I'm very Paphos-centric and I don't tend to think of Limassol as a tourist area 😅 Agia Napa and Protaras are quite a distance from the base.

The centre of Ayia Napa is less than six miles from the nearest sovereign base area. Hardly quite a distance.

Tillow4ever · 16/01/2026 18:34

We went to Paphos last Easter. It was our first abroad holiday as a family, and first abroad in 20 years! We all ready enjoyed it (kids were 19, 17 and 13).

Tillow4ever · 16/01/2026 18:36

Also, it was 22-26° C every day whilst we were there last year… but I think Easter was later and they said the week before had been much colder, the day after we left the temperature dropped too.

Dhekelia is 18 miles from Agia Napa.

The border isn’t.

"There is a heightened risk of regional tension. Escalation could lead to travel disruption and other unanticipated impacts,” the FCDO stated.

What does this mean? I want to go but want to be wise in making a decision to go.

You drive around the base to get to Ayia Napa from Larnaca Airport.

Having lived on ESBA... Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Protaras all felt very close. We went frequently! Plus you'd see the odd UN vehicle around. The UN protected border is very close to Protaras

But it never felt dangerous.

We've all learnt something today 😉

@AplineDaisies you've had some helpful replies, hope you get some inspiration.

We are going to protaras for Easter, we were there for the first time in October and fell in love with it. Our kids were 12 and 15 at the time.

I’m not cancelling my trip.

I have spent a lot of time in Cyrus over the years and there have been these warnings in force before. Several times. I doubt you will notice anything out of the ordinary while you are there.

elliegirl · 16/01/2026 23:07

I'm Cypriot - it's perfectly safe. This is an overreaction. Also, there's no Greek/Turkish side - just the Republic of Cyprus and the occupied side.

There's definitely the Turkish side at the North and the Greek side in the south. However you want to say it. I know the Turkish side isn't internationally recognised but that's how it is at the mo

Are you attempting to explain my own country to me?!

TheSquareMile · 17/01/2026 11:51

A good friend of mine was born in London to a Cypriot family.

He lives in the heart of the Cypriot diaspora in North London, but his family come from Paphos and he goes there regularly. He tells me a lot of good things about the area and makes it sound really appealing.

I'll be seeing him on Monday, so will put your question to him.

It most likely means things like sudden land and air border or airspace closures for Cyprus I would think.
