Holiday accommodation in Lagos, Portugal

Hi
I am looking for a 10 night stay in Lagos in August and wanted your accommodation recommendations. I am going round in circles looking at Trip Advisor. It would be for my husband and I and 2 teens. We would ideally just like breakfast inc so we can choose a restaurant in the eve. Is Lagos even right for this sort of thing? Always been all inc before but would welcome a change. Happy to take other Portugal suggestions! Thank you!

We used to go to Lagos every year but it started to deteriorate, it’s quite seedy in the evenings.

We now go to Tavira, really pretty, lots to do and some great accommodation.

I’m sad to hear that Lagos is seen as a bit seedy. We first starting going there 25 years ago and having gone back again at the end of last year didn’t find it had changed so much.

We’ve always stayed around the marina area, and for either a couple of days up to a week, using it as a base when we had smaller children. I’m not sure that I’d stay in one place for 10 days with teens.

@Nevergotdivorced Thanks that’s such a shame but really good to know- whereabouts in Tavira as we would like some lovely restaurants close by.

We stay in an adults only hotel but there are plenty more.
The beach is accessed via a little ferry, it’s about 2 Euro return, it is the nicest beach we have ever been to in Europe.
The town is really sweet with lots of restaurants, there is also a shopping centre about a 10 minute walk from the old town and a train station if you fancied any day trips.
We never hire a car here.

Would you consider an apartment rather than hotel? I can give the name of the one we stayed in if you like. Two bedrooms and sofa bed in living room so plenty of space. There was a restaurant on site but not sure of opening hours.

We had a nice holiday and did not have any bad experiences in Lagos though it did feel slightly edgy for some reason. Where we stayed was outside the town centre and our kids were younger so we would not have seen any late night stuff anyway.

@DecorhateThank you that’s really kind but we were looking for Aparthotel so that we can still have the buzz of a hotel if that makes sense! I’ll regret that when it’s too ‘ peoply’ in the Summer!!!!

Did you pick somewhere @Caterpillar41 ? Still going round the houses looking for similar.

I live in Portugal. Lagos is not seedy 🙄 You will have a great holiday. There are places I prefer (Tavira is not really one of them to be honest as it can be a little elderly - but each to their own). You can also look at Carvoeiro and Ferragudo. They are more central, so easy to reach all the other towns and villages. But you need to make sure you are in the main centre of each place or at least a relatively easy walk. Happy if you want to message me for more information if you are still looking. I am actually in real estate here, so I DO know the Algarve well!

We went to Lagos a couple years ago, and I certainly wouldn’t describe it as ‘seedy’. It’s a lovely town with excellent beaches. We stayed at the Aqualuz aparthotel. We booked b&b so we could eat out at restaurants in the evenings. It was ok, if somewhat tired. The pools had also seen better days. Excellent location though, convenient for the town centre & beaches and around 15 mins walk from the big supermarket.

Pingo Doce was the supermarket a few minutes walk from the marina (it’s still there).

DH told the kids it’s called that because they sell sweet penguin juice 🙄

I love Lagos, beautiful beaches, lively at night. I think it must be on the ‘backpackers’ itinerary as it has this vibe. Families too, a bit of a creative/hippy influence.

The first time we went, I was relieved we had chosen Lagos as we saw other towns during the coach drop off. Pleased we hadn’t chosen elsewhere.

We stayed out at Estrada Da Meia Praia, Lagos, the Iberostar Hotel. We enjoyed the peace out there and the walk along the beach into the town.

Only issue in August was that the town restaurants were so busy - unless we reserved ahead or ate very early we couldn’t get a table.

I Went to Tavira in 1987 and I’m sad to hear it’s a ‘bit elderly’. It was known as the Venice of the Algarve and the beach is amazing! The sea is very gentle too not like further along the coast. Mosquitoes were relentless in the town centre though.

RainRainRain2025 · 03/03/2026 16:24

We also found the restaurants so busy in August that it was hard to find somewhere to eat without a prior reservation.

It was also pretty windy, and that made it a bit cold and unpleasant at times.

We loved Lagos in October last year and started at Casa Mae.

The zoo is worth a visit as well as the boat tours along the incredible coastline.
